Alcapone: Guns Don't Argue (TJDDD240)
A wicked
album going back to the era I know best really, Alcapone rockin over all
theriddims of the early 70’s. Whoever produces he was always on top be it Keith
Hudson , Lee Perry, Joe Gibbs, Bunny lee, everybody.
A style of
his own and you can see from the early stuff with Hudson like Zaka Za Za, the
wonderful Spanish Omiga how he got picked up by the heavyweights, especially
once it mellowed down to harder tracks like Ball of Confusion.
Best period
is 1971 1972 when he was prolific and is featured haeavily on here - It must come and Ripe Cherry for
Bunny Lee, Well dread for Lee Perry, conscious stuff with JJJohnson Rocking to
Ethiopia, King of Kings for Ernest Ranglin and so on. Of course being prolific means that not all is top notch but
ther eis certainley a higher than average proportion. Guns Don’t argue the
title chosen for this for obvious reasons
My favourites
I dunno too many to choose really but I do like Popa version to the to Tpppa
Top Rhtythm and the ensuing lee Perry productions. But he could toast over any
style. Jah Rastafari is a killer
too.
Recommended.
