Bobby Womack - The Poets - Castle Music

This package consist of the three album trilogy by Bobby Womack from the early to mid eighties. These alums were pretty much a shining light for pure soul fans in this period.  Unmistakenly Bobby Womack including all his usual trademarks, gruuff vocals, monologues, uptempo and slow these albums perked up a fairly stagnant period and were good enough to stand on therir own and make people take notice.  Historically they will probably go down as being a landmark.

The Poet is a stunning album from the modern dance qualities of So Many Sides of You, a very topical Bobby Lay your lovin on me, disco fever of Stand up, and some great ballads, especially Where do we go from here.  For me Secrets is the top track, it has anthemic qualities, it meanders and builds, with excellent backbeat and funky guitar and Bobby in full flow.  Also contains a couple of Bonus acoustic tracks.

Poet 2 arguably surpassed its predecessor opening with one of the alltime top Slow Jams, Love has finally come at last.  But It takes a lot of strength to say goodbye is more emotive. Both of these tracks are enhanced by the stunning vocals of patti Labelle.  Indeed Bobby’s vocals and emotion on this album is as deep as you will find. Of the upbeat material Trying to get over you is class whereas the other tracks are a bit disco.

Someday we’ll meet again was released as an album, but given that Bobby had moved on, and it consisted of outtakes and other material from the Poet period it was known as Poet 3.  These days with CD’s being longer than albums I guess they would have been included at the outset. These tracks certainly shouldn’t be regarded as outtakes because the quality is still there.  I’m so proud for example is a quality slow jam.  Someday we’ll all be free is lyrically strong. Falling in love again is a fast paced dancer
