Various Artists: Trojan Dancehall Roots Box Set (TJETD243)

Late 70’s early eighties early dancehall roots selection and there is some great stuff here.  As the title says concentrating on the roots culture, songs of unity, jah rastafari, africanism, corruption, oppression and so on.  For a soul head like me it is refreshing to note how many wonderful and soulful voices are included, including that of the male vocal harmony groups.

Mostly quite mellow and heavy on the beats and some great tracks. Some of these box sets have been a little suspect but this one scores heavily. Just to pick out a few of the top tracks (for me) :

On CD1 The Viceroys We must Unite, the very strong Barry Brown’s Lead us Jah Jah, rockers Don Carlos Tribulation, the sweet sounds of the great Cornel campbell, three groups and one DJ who can all do little wrong wailing souls, Mighty diamonds, Israel Vibration and the husky Prince Far I.

CD2:-Pretty much the same names as on CD1 score heavily again but Tristan palmer is also worth a mention

CD3 – I suppose the number of artists featured on the whole set is quite small, the same ones featured on CD3, but Cornel Campbell is oh so good, and I well remember Earl Sixteen mashing up the dance along with Bobby Melody.

A great set.
