Dennis Brown: Money In My Pocket - Definitive Collection (TJDDD236)

The Crown Prince of Reggae would be on the top of many people’s best and most influential of Reggae’s finest, and he would be near the top of mine.  There are some absolutely superb tracks on here, he was consistently quality despite having so many releases at his peak times.

This album spans 1970 to 1996.  Lips of Wine, Silhouettes are distinctive, soulful, accessible, wonderful from the early days.  1972 was particularly fruitful, the hits just kept on coming, Things in Life, Musical Heatwave, What about the half, and the enormous and deserved hit, pop hit too, Money in my pockett (here in original format)

The next one that really grabs me is Why Seek more but it was really the Wolves and leapords set that put DB on another plane, one of the Reggae sets of all time, this was on another level. Funny Feelings I have fond memories of out of Gussie Clark.  Ain’t that loving you is not far behind, great stiff.

CD2 kick in at 1978 with Equal Rights and the remake of Money in my pocket.  But he went from Strength to strength Sitting and Watching, Love has found a way, Halfway Up Halfway down, there is no letting up whether it was Joe Gibbs, Sly  and Robie, whoever.  Virtually everything was written by him whether lovers or conscious and lyrically not much tops the eerie, pleading of Promised land or the militant Revolution.

Choosing favourites from nearly fifty is pretty near impossible so just sit back and take it all in. Absolutely Crisp Biscuit.
