Unique Treasures,
tell me about it. How long has it
been out and how’s it going down.
The C.D. has 7 hand picked song out of
many songs that represents 7 candles.
It's a spiritual thing.
Technically its been out since last
year, but I have recently been added to
CDBaby.com/dique within the past two months and I've been doing quite well
since.
You pleased with reaction so far, what
tracks are getting attention.
I am very pleased with the reation that
I receive from my originals, they seemed to really hit home with a lot of
people. Each track equally touches
someone.
You’re replacement, the more upbeat
track, is the one most likely in my view? Though all I need is you is probably
my favourite.
Thank you.
There is a kind of smoothness, a
comfort in your songs. Is that
you’re style?
Yes, my style is definitely smooth. Someone said just yesterday that I
reminded them of Jill Scott.
What is your favourite –
Like so many other artist, I would have to say the same
thing, it's hard to say. They are
all my babies, and I love them all
equally. However, I like performing "More Than Half". I like the feeling that I get from the
audience (mostly the ladies) when I do that song cause
they can relate.
Is this your first album –
Yes, this is my first album.
How long did it take to put together
from conception to street.
It took about 3
weeks to get it to the streets after all of the tracks were completed, and it
took me months to get all of the tracks down.
What’s it like putting together
something like this on your own, as an independent.
It's frustrating trying to get your
music distributed, and its exhilerating when you get the positive feedback from
the fans.
Who are the key people that helped you?
All of the producers listed on the album played key roles
towards helping me to acheive the finishing touches,
however my fellow
singer Tingle whose also on cdbaby.com/Tingle she put a show together for the
both of us, and I needed to get my cds done in a big hurry, so she was very
instrumental in helping me, along with my producer Daniel McGhee, he helped me
a great deal.
What’s your show like, getting good
reviews.
My show is very appealing I'm told
because I dance a lot, I have a lot of gestures and I have nice outfits
on. I sang a mixture of songs, top
40,
show tunes, ballads and of course my
originals....so it's something for everyone when I get through people usually
hound me about doing another
show.
Tell me how you put a song together,
who are your influences
My influences are
old school Motown music and Sam Cooke.
I always remember what Berry Gordy said, "keep it simple".
So I write my songs with a story line,
but not too complicated.
Have you always written and sung
No, I've been in
several Girl groups where we sung what ever songs where hand picked for our
voices. But my outlet was to write
songs at home with other musicians in the meantime so that when the time came,
I could showcase my own writing abilities.
Tell me about yourself. Brief Personal History!
I'm born and raised in New Orleans, LA
to a musican father "Bobby Wright" and my stay at home Mom. I have one Sister (Karen), she is one
of my
biggest fans. We moved to L.A. I received a B.A. degree from Loyola Marymount
University in the class of Music. Then I toured.
Musical
family?
Most of my family sang or play
instruments. My dad played music
with Ike & Tina Turner, my cousin Jimi Taylor played with Willie
Hutch, Graham Central Station, etc...
Tell me about some of the things that
you have done –
I've been featured on the Monty Hall
Telethon, I've toured with Klymaxx, I've done shows at the John Anson Ford
Theatre, a host of benefits at
schools and churches.
You’ve jammed with Stevie
Stevie was great, he summoned me at
around 4:00 a.m. in the dark morning. I asked his assistant if she knew what
time it was, she repyled, yes, and Stevie doesn't tell time, so get out of bed
and come down to the studio cause he want to hear you sang. So, I got out of bed, went to the
studio,
sang about 5 or 6 songs, laughed and
joked, and kept in touch with Stevie after that for about 5 or 6 years.
And done some back up work and toured
with Klymaxx
Yes, I was actually featured on two
songs live in concert on a tour with Klymaxx that also had the brothers DeBarge
on board. We all had a great
time, they were very supportive of me
and my style of music.
And you’ve toured Japan – is that
right, what was that like?
Yes, I've toured
Japan, Hawaii, Osan, as a solo artist and with Klymaxx.
Are you full time in music?
Unfortunately I am
not a full time artist, would love to make a living doing all music, and I hope
that my beautiful songs will make this happen
for me in the year 2005......like now!
Do you know anything about the Uk, you
getting any feedback from the UK or
elsewhere –
I do not know anything about the
UK....however I do enjoy artist from there, Mica Paris for one is my favorite,
I was fortunate
enough to meet her here in Los Angeles,
had dinner with her as part of her entourage after a concert that she had here,
she was awesome, I love her
voice/styling.
And what are you doing now, promoing
the album, or working on the next phase.
I am always promoting the album, as
well as working on the next
phase, it's a constant, I eat, live and
sleep this stuff.
And how do you think things are shaping
up.
Better than most,
and not as good as some.
What can we look forward to in the future,
your ambitions
You can look forward to my having a
great show that I'm going to send to
you via email, and you can show
everyone in the UK - Dique "Unique" Cannon
live in concert.
Anything you’d like to add.
May God continue to bless!
Thanks for your time.
It was a
pleasure. Stay in the light.
