I thought
that this would get a bit samey and start to bore but in fact it is a nice mix
of familiar riddims, lesser known ones, good melodies and hooks aside from all the
technical wizardry. Particularly good is the earlier material from say 1974
thru 1977, and the standout for me are the Tapper Zukie productions. I don’t know there something about
those tunes that hold a particular place in my head and my past, though I suppose
you could argue that they are not particularly innovativas compared to the
wizards of this genre.
So Disc one
– Natty dread Dub – is a killer, with Hortense ellis as Queen Tiney and the
Aggrovators, The Musical Intimidators (what a track) and the slightly more
relaxed Tedious Dub, the melodic Tommy McCook. Not a great fan of Augustus Pablo but he had his place and
Fat Girl Jean from his conceptual Thriller is featured. Not much vocals to go
for but a mention for my man Cornel Campbell.
Disc 2 –
Roots Dub – is harer I guess, more laid back, more stripped down, apart from In
Crowd is less instant, dub in Love kept alive by the horn patterns. More Intimidators which again shine. I
tend to dislike the tracks that are stripped back only to Bass and Drums, I
like them to retain a toast, or a horns hook, or an element of vocals, just
something to keep the track alive, and there are lessof those kind of things on
this Volume.
CD3 –
Effortless Dub – contains the top dub, again the Intimidators, Marijuana. So continuing the point above for me
the better tracks are those that typically are not the straight Roots Bands
like the Radics, Aggrovators but what those same guys have done behind Tapper
Zukie, or Cornell campbell, where some of the lead atist bits are retained.
