Keith Hudson Presents: The Hudson Affair (TJDDD221)

Despite being aware of things that he had done previously I was most aware of Keith Hudson with his later solo material and I wasn’t particularly keen on some of that. Thus I let that taint my opinion in getting around to this. Mistake on my part!

There are some cracking tunes on this, particularly at the front end. Kicking of with Ken Boothe’s immense Old Fashion Way coupled with URoy and (particularly) Dennis Alcapone toasts. Also good ‘own’ material like Old Broom and the faster Don’t get me confused.

Then a blast of some really soulful reggae sides, Delroy Wilson I’m gonna get you and Run Run, and then the mighty Alton’s Big Bad Boy and the pleading and wonderful You are Mine. Use of the big names of the day was prevalent like Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, Augustus Pablo, U Roy.

Lots of variety too with a jazzy interpretation of Masekela’s Riot, with Uroy on toast supreme. Uroy Jnr’s Tribal War arguably the start of Hudson’s more stabbing funky deep sound.

Disc 2 , Mafia, is very much of tha ilk. Hudson inding his own groove that was deeper, more sinister, harder, rootsier, diverse. Melody Maker and all it’s derivatives being the best
