Jackie Edwards: This Is My Story (TJDDD237)

From 1959 to 1965 Jackie was produced by Chris Blackwell and there are some great ballads here, some are a bit scmaltzy but at best are very very soulful – very American style be it doowop or boogie but for that era only to be expected.

It wasn’t until 1969 that there was anything approaching a Jamaican beat and indeed it wasn’t until even later the early 70’s when they took on anything like an own style.  The voice is always very nice but certainly wasn’t an originator.  He took on more of a personal direction when he was writing and producing himself.

CD1 is subtiled The Vintage Years but although all very pleasant I feel that its best period was the Lovers era of late 70’s which is featured on CD2.  Although not innovative he was certainly appealing to a mature lovers following, as I well remember from my times living in Brixton at this time. Touching on Dancehall in the 80’s and I have to say that tracks like Ghetto King are amongst my favourites.
