Jimmy Cliff: The Harder they Come (Definitive Collection) (TJDDD291)

Well what can be said, this album spans over 40 years, Jimmy Cliff is a legend and the tracks on here will prove the reason why. Containing all styles and nuances of jamaican music over 5 decades

Hits from front to back.  Picks will of course be personal and everybody will have their own preferences but for me they are as follows.

Ska all over the world with its Curtis Mayfield inflections. Give a little with its Soulful poundings (despite its poppy vocals).  Waterfall follows which of course was big in Northern Soul circles.  Wonderful World , sufferin and Vietnam because it was a part of my youth both in terms of fun but consciousness as well.

The harder they come not only was a groundbreaking film, its also a tune.

But one track stands above all as it simply is one of the greatest tracks of all time and to this day still sets the tears flowing, Many Rivers to Cross.

Jimmy Cliff's influence on the globalisation of Reggae has been profound. After making his recording debut as a teenager in 1961, he cut a series of best selling Ska titles for Leslie Kong and Byron Lee before setting to London at the behest of Island Record's owner Chris Blackwell. His breakthrough came in 1969 with the release the groundbreaking Jimmy Cliff album for Trojan. Over the years since, his intelligent and thought-provoking brand of music has brought him success way on a truly international scale and he remains today one of the giants of the World Music scene. Although there have been other collections of Cliff's work, none have been quite so comprehensive as this superb anthology. Opening with his debut disc from 1960, the set traces his career from a teenage prodigy to an international superstar, featuring all his major UK, European and US hits along the way, and closing with a track from his Grammy winning album, Fantastic Plastic People from 2003. Quite simply, there could be no better introduction to the man and his music.
