Junior Delgado: Sons Of Slaves (TJACD288)

The first half of this album being 70’s roots reggae at its finest, the latter half was recorded in 1988.

The first track, Time Unlimited’s Africa we are going home, is an absolute stone cold anthem, infectious riddim, wild vocals and hypnotic anthemic chorus, a rasta anthem.  But ot doesn’t let up Run Baldhead is equally as good, this time Rupie Edwards produced (as against lee Perry on the opening cut)

Sons of Slaves the title track in all its 12” glory, and apart from the excellent lyric is also great vocally. Raiders is a great steppers track.

He later tracks do not quite have the vitality of the earlier tracks, production methods had changed and the productions had less depth and feel, that said they were still as good as anything else that was around.

After his untimely death only last year this is a great showcase of the rebel artist and roots legend.

When Junior 'Jux' Delgado passed away in April of this year, Reggae lost one of its true greats. He had first made his name with the vocal group, Time Unlimited, with whom he cut a handful of sides for Lee Perry and Rupie Edwards. The break-up of the group in 1974 resulted in Delgado striking out on his own and his supreme talent quickly brought success, when his smash, 'Tichen' topped the Jamaican charts. From then on, he continued to remain a powerful figure on the Reggae scene, never sacrificing his strongly held beliefs, and at the time of his death was working on two new albums.Featuring Junior's best known early works both as a solo artist and with Time Unlimited, this set traces his rise to the forefrontof the Reggae scene, including a number of Roots classics, including 'Sons Of Slaves', 'Tichen' and 'The Raiders'. With a serious collection of his work previously unavailable, this release is a fitting tribute to a man whose songwriting talents and uncompromising tsyle brought him a strong following around the globe.
