Lamont Dozier - Why Can't We Be Lovers? - Sanctuary Midline

The first CD – Love and Beauty contains material culledfrom the Invictus period of 1972 to 1973. Some of it I don’t particularly get or care for like the string laden Don’t stop playing our song, but this is more than overcome by some great tracks which stand the test of time, Why can’t we be lovers, If you don’t want to be in my life, new breed kinda woman where that distinctive vocal, great song and great production merge together into simply great songs.

CD 2 – the ABC years revisited.  The lush arrangement of the classic Breaking out all over, and the uptempo (but hardly a northern soul dancefloor filler!) Fish ain’t biting which came out back to back on a single if memory serves, two great sides.  Trying to hold on to my woman is a 7 minute plus epic ballad.  Most of the rest is fine, but given that this is a cherry picked compilation of best of’s the overall quality is not as high as one might expect.  I find that the best of the best of lamont is very good/ excellent, but if it ain’t that, then its not all that.

CD3 – Going back to my roots – Well going back to my roots of course is all that. Almost on a par is You ought to be in pictures. Boogie Business another rare groove is a tad too formulaic.  Love me to the max is a fine midtempo dancer as is Tough act to follow.

Product Info

(Previously CMETD1221) Not content with combining with the two Holland brothers to write dozens of hits for Motown and their own Invictus label in the 60s and early 70s, Lamont Dozier then set out on a solo career of his own. This is the first full-length anthology of his work, with three CDs cherrypicking the best of his albums for Invictus, ABC and Warner Brothers. It includes such 70s soul classics as ‘Going Back To My Roots’ and ‘Why Can’t We Be Lovers?’, all delivered with the panache you’d expect from a genuine soul legend.
