Level 42 - Live At Rockpalast –

An incredibly long, over 3 hours, featuring two concerts a year apart in 1983 and 1984, at Zeche Bochum and Grugahalle Essen. Naturally therefeore there is a little bit of duplication of tracks but this does not matter.

Lots of that chopping bass style that Mark King was associated with. All the big hits are done like Love Games and Hot water.

Both are thoroughly professional live performances and it looks as if the audience got their moneys worth, as you do here. It encompassess jazz funk but it goes beyond that.

I was never a big fan of Level 42, yes it was innovative and came to the fore within a genre that I was particularly interested in, and thus helped formulate that genre and my interest in it. However I always felt that they needed a good soulful vocalist to enhance thaeir sound.

Nonetheless they became massive (so what do I know) and this will appeal to their fans and it is excellent value for money

Review

At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was a jazz-funk fusion band. By the end of the eighties, they were a pop - R'n'B band with a number of hit singles to their credit.

Featuring Mark King on bass and vocals, brothers Phil Gould on drums and Boon Gould on guitar - Level 42 recorded two concerts for Rockpalast on 29 October 1983 in Bochum and on the 13 October 1984 in Essen.

The band will be remembered for their hit singles in the late eighties with The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up) which hit the British Top 10, Lessons in Love which was their first #1 hit in Britain and Something About You which charted to #7 in the States followed by two other major successes Running In The Family in 1987 and Staring At The Sun in 1988, both great successes in the UK. This 188 minute Live in Concert DVD is a timely reminder of the strength and versatility of Level 42.
