Heya Mike,
This is Lori Perry calling, thanks
for asking I'm doing just well.
I was born in a small country town,
Bakersfield, California one of four girls the baby to be exact. Our mother died
at an early age and my sisters and I were raised by our grandparents. Our
grandfather was (C.O.G.I.C. ) Church Of God On Christ minister and along
with a few more cousins my sister's and I were his choir, and this is were I
got most of my gospel training. As a child, I listened to Spanish music
because it was what my grandfather enjoyed. They didn't allow us to listen to
Soul or Rock music in those days.
About the age
of thirteen, I moved to Los Angeles and started hearing more
soulful music of course. After hanging with a cousin of ours who played
beautiful piano, he asked if we could start singing in clubs with him but
I was too young to get in so I had to dress myself to look the age. After we
did a few clubs with him- Perri was formed. Later on we heard the likes of Pat
Metheny and I wrote lyrics to his music we recorded it and sent it too
him, needless to say he was blown away and invited us to come and perform with
him in San Diego, Ca that year, that night we performed we got a standing
ovation and the contract was born. From than on it was one call after another
with groups/individuals approaching asking if we could come and
guest record such as Anita Baker, Yellow Jackets, George Duke Roberta
Flack Al Jareau, Spike Lee the list is mighty long.
Soon after Perri was signed to Zebra
Records and recorded our first and second albums with them and then MCA
Records in 1990 picked us up, we then recorded our last record
on that label. We have a big following because people just like good soul
touching music and it is always what my sisters and I have tried to deliver.
Word got out and I started working on Television Themes such as "Any
Day Now" a syndicated cable show that aired here about five
years, "Leaving L. A." "Malcom and Eddie""Set It
Off" with Queen Latifah, "Family Man" with Seal, being
invited to sing "Amazing Grace" for President Clinton's inauguration,
I guess it was just knowing people and them liking my voice because I
really can't tell you how I got to do those jobs.
Brian Culbertson had a former manager of
ours Howard Lowell that introduced Brian and I. He campaigned about a year
for him and I us to join forces and do something
musically. And in the midst of us working, Howard was stricken with
cancer and died, we were devastated to say- but we continued the
project and the tune Brian and I wrote in five minutes in his living room
in rememberance of Howard " Gone Miss You" made number
on the Urban and Smooth Jazz Charts here.
One day in my many questions to The
Lord I received and answer in my heart as too is this it Lord? I felt I
wanted to do more music but it wasn't filling the void. And He gave me
the answer which was "Gospel Jazz! "He knew that I liked Jazz but
wasn't content not singing HIs praises, so that was the definite answer I
was looking for in my life. Twas " No Longer Run" was born. I
had no money to do a record but I wnated/nedded to do one. Ayear after I got my
answer I was working in Atlanta, Georgia with George Duke, James
Ingram and Jeffery Osborne. A gentleman by the name of Bill
Parks informed me after the show that he liked my voice and if
he could record me one day soon, and me knowing people who ask
that question all the time, but most are not sincere, I said yeah and
didn't think anything more about it. Well, he found my number through a mutual
friend and invited me to come back to GA which is were he lives. Flying back
and forth from LA to GA we conquered two songs with some local guys he was
familiar with and it started sounding really good. I had these songs in my heart for
quite sometime and now they were finally being laid on tracks. One thing led to
another I started calling in favors from players I've worked with through the
years such as George who was so kind and had been urging me to do this for
a while, and they were more than happy to play on the record. A year
later " Wrote This Song" was born! I know we've been hard to find but
with the glory of technology I can be found on my website "loriperryonline.com"
or call 1-800 907-5172
I'm hoping that lives will be changed
listening to my music. It's much music out here that says the same things with
no real meaning behind it, and I just wanted to bring in a fresh new wave of
heart to heart issued music that would/could be thought provoking if you will.
I'm busy trying to promote it with live shows in churches clubs cruises you
name it, we're there. I would love to come to the UK, I've been there more than
once singing with others, George Michael/ Elton John as well as
Perri. Now that my record is finished, we are open for business. I've
been writing songs for the next solo project and after that we'll be in
the stages of pulling a Perri reunion album together....
Hey, I'm still here and here
musically with a vengance. I love music that touches the depth of ones
soul and I'm sure they're plenty others out there who feels the same as I
do---so how can I stop? ????? I can't.....
Thanks again for your interest...enjoy
Happy Holidays!
