I dunno, I was around the London scene in the late 70’s early 80’s when Lovers evolved and was big. I guess also that it was slightly frowned upon by many who were into the ‘harder’ stuff. That said I have some great memories of functions particularly (as against clubs, dancehall etc) where I really enjoyed it. But in a nutshell there was not too much of it that was exceptional and stands alone in its own right.

And that is reflected on this showcase, commendable as it is in its objectives, its falls down a bit musically. The best is good, brings back good memories but a bigger proportion is either substandard or doesn’t stand the test of time.

Format: Treble CD album Released: Sep 26 2005 Price: £12.99 By the mid-1970's, Jamaican Reggae had predominantly become pre-occupied with social protest and the religious beliefs of Rastafarianism. While the music continued to find favour with many second generation West Indians living in the UK, a great number felt increasingly disaffected by its direction and turned to home-based Reggae artists to fulfil their demand for a more romantic style of music. The result was Lover's Rock, a style that from 1976 to the mid-eighties dominated the black British music scene. For all its popularity, both in the UK and around the world, Lover's Rock has been greatly over-looked, so much so that this collection can be considered the first genuine serious overview of the genre. Strictly focusing on the sounds of the mid-seventies to mid-eighties, when Lover's Rock was at the height of its popularity, this set features some of Reggae's best-loved UK & Ja-based balladeers.
