Various Artists: Dawning Of A New Era (TJDDD252)

Wow this takes me back, back to my era where I first came across theserocksteady tunes  the formulative years of my youth. How I well remember happening on a lot of these sounds.

Not all are brilliant but those that are certainly encapsulate an era and this compilation certainly does what it sets out to do, it hits the spot.

A CRACKING START WITH Rudy Mills wonderful John Jones, son of a gun, followed by several derrick Morgan’s (especially Fat Man) who for a period was everybody’s number one.

Even back then I always loved the vocal groups and none more so that the Pioneers whose excellent Reggae Beat and Su Su Su are both featured here. Of course wet Dream hit big time and mostly because of it’s lyrical content but it was a great riddim and there were many versions and here we feature the Reggae Boys What you gonna do.

Other top tracks are the Tenors Another Scorcher, peanut vendor, lloyd Charners – Argument, Glen Adams Cat Woman (Pat Kelly’s How Long),

'Dawning of a New Era' pulls together for the first time 2 CD’s worth of prime records from 1968-69, a period when Skinheads were still largely an underground youth movement and not a violent newspaper headline. Focusing on rare and in demand records rather than the obligatory Pop chart placings, many of the tracks on this set never been issued since their original small pressings nearly thirty-five years ago. And with artists of the caliber of Rico Rodriquez, Lloyd Charmers, The Tennors, Lester Sterling, the Ethiopians and Tommy McCook featured, this collection will undoubtedly be highly sought-after by all fans of the Skinhead sound.
