Info: -Richard Poindexter was born in the nation’s capital of Washington D.C and raised in Newport News, Virginia. He and his brother Bobby sang locally with groups such as The Swans, The Silver Moon Gospel Quintet and The Gems, with whom he first performed at New York’s famous Apollo Theatre. After graduating from Washington Carver High School, The Poindexter Brothers headed for the Big Apple hoping to find the streets paved with gold and to establish a successful career in the music business primarily as writers, arrangers and producers.

Amongst their catalogue of early work they penned and produced stand-out soul gems such as “Hypnotized” and “I’ll Be Sweeter” for Linda Jones, “She’s A Fox” for The Icemen (featuring Jimi Hendrix on guitar), “I Dig Your Act” for The O’Jays, and “Baby, Baby Please” for Timothy Wilson. “Baby, Baby Please” was first recorded however in 1965 by a New York vocal group called The Implements which included a young man by the name of David Turner, now of The Persuaders whose relationship with Richard Poindexter now stretches back some 40 years. David was also first to record “Look Over Your Shoulder” as a member of The Implements. This later became a hit record for The Escorts, another group on George Kerr’s growing and successful roster at that time. Richard and Bobby also recorded singles for Verve and Tuff as The Poindexter Brothers.

They formed The Persuaders primarily as a vehicle by which to showcase their growing reputations as writers, producers and nurturers of talent. The Persuaders were born out of another group called The Internationals that included Douglas “Smokey“ Scott, Jimmy Barnes and Charles Stodghill on whom they had already recorded “Too Sweet To Be Lonely” (The Poindexter Brothers also recorded a version on The O’Jays for Bell) and “My Beautiful Philosophy” for the D’Ore label. From a group called The Majestics, they acquired another vocalist from Richard’s home city of Newport News, Virginia by the name of Willie B.Holland.

The first album distributed by Atlantic and released on their own Win Or Lose label was entitled “Thin Line Between Love And Hate’’ and was a break-out success in both pop and soul markets. Aside from the now-classic title track, it also provided hit singles in “Peace In The Valley of Love” and “Love's Gonna Pack Up". The Persuaders run of success continued with their second album release, albeit with a new line-up that included an exciting singer named Tommy Hill. The album contained a cut called “Trying Girls Out” which although popular on its initial release was to get a new lease of life more than 20 years later when Jay-Z and Kanye West used the track on the remix of “Girls, Girls, Girls” for which Richard received a Platinum Disc. The hip-hop scene also gave new life to “Love’s Gonna Pack Up” which Will Smith heavily sampled the for the cut “Willow Is A Player” on 2002’s “Born To Reign” set.

The hits for The Persuaders slowed up as disco took hold but not before Richard and Bobby provided the two best songs on the last Persuaders album release on Calla in 1976 in the form of “Gambling On A Sure Shot” and “Trying To Love Two Women”. Both cuts were produced by Norman Harris and have that distinctive uptempo 70’s Philadelphia sound that was prevalent at the time and remain hugely popular on the dance floors to this day.

From the late 60’s and throughout the 1970’s Richard also wrote and produced Florence Ballard , The Manhattans, Dee Dee Warwick, Carl Hall, Pat Johnson, The Topics (featuring one-time Persuader Charles Stodghill), Tony Mason and The Young Gents. He also found his songs increasingly covered by artists ranging from The Lost Generation, Bloodstone, David Hudson, The Escorts and Teena Marie to the likes of H Town, The Pretenders and Annie Lennox, all of whom scored big in the 80’s and 90’s with “Thin Line Between Love And Hate”. It also became the basis for the story-line and title for a movie in 1996 starring Martin Lawrence.

Around the same time, Richard and Tommy Hill formed a new set of Persuaders featuring one-time stand-in Alexander Brown, who was first introduced to the group by Douglas “Smokey” Scott, and David Turner who had first worked with Richard as a member of The Implements back in the 60's. They regularly performed on classic soul reviews throughout the United States and this continued until Tommy’s sad and untimely death in 2002. It is all the more poignant therefore that Willie B.Holland, the only surviving member of the group to appear on the first two albums, agreed to appear on this CD. The album also introduces for the very first time on record, the powerhouse vocals of the latest member to join the group, Tony “Showtime” Riley who hails from Brooklyn, New York.

Richard Poindexter already has a place in soul music history from a career that now stretches back some 40 years. It is also evident from the new compositions that he wrote for "Made To Be Loved" that his special talent in being able to craft songs with strong melodies and memorable lyrics never abandoned him throughout some quiet and at times difficult years. The release of this CD is an opportunity to appreciate once again the creativity of one of soul music’s real unsung heroes and marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of The Persuaders.

The Persuaders are Richard Poindexter, Alexander Brown, David Turner and Tony "Showtime" Riley.

Original songs by Richard Poindexter are published by Mr.P.Music(BMI)and Persuaders Ltd.Inc (BMI).”

Review: - I find myself a little bit disappointed by this album, maybe I expected too much because of the groups pedigree, my own personal liking for male vocal grouips.  This feeling was probably enhanced because the first track A Woman Was Made to Be Loved is a killer, superb vocals, great tempo and feel.

After that the album contains some great vocal pieces as you’d expect, but there’s something about the album that doesn’t hang together quite right.  For me that is, but what do I know.

Never Stop Loving You starts off as if its going to be a great track, the lead is excellent, the opening bars leaves a great feeling of expectancy, but I dunno some of the backing bits don’t seem to come in right.  I think this track could be sooo good.  And that remains my feeling throughout the rest I’m afraid.

Don't Think I Won't Leave is my second favourite (after the first track) , a long and epic ballad built around the lead, excellent.  What About You is a sultry ballad.  All Up in Your Love  and Mama are for example more uptempo but the Persuaders have always been known for their ballads and the album consists mainly of them like The Wedding Song, You're the Best Thing.  I Don't Think So contains an excellent strained lead vocal.

Some great vocals on here, a couple of fine tracks, built on the classic old skool soul days and when all said and done I still wish there was more of this.

Tracks: - 1. A Woman Was Made to Be Loved, 2. Never Stop Loving You, 3. Don't Think I Won't Leave ,4. What About You, 5. All Up in Your Love ,6. Mama
7. As One ,8. The Wedding Song ,9. You're the Best Thing ,10. This Time Next Year, 11. She's Mine, 12. I Don't Think So,  13. A House Is Not a Home, 14. Hypnotized ,15. All the People

Info: - welcome all to the world of Amar Khalil. A hot new soulful R&B Inspirational Artist, From the music mecca Oakland California. Amar has teamed up with one of today's hottest young producer's, Jamie Hawkins. Son of the world's famous gospel family Walter & Tramaine Hawkins. Also, husband and producer of Hit recording artist Sunny Hawkins. We want to thank you 4 checking Amar Khalil out. Enjoy!

"AMAR KHALIL"
Oakland, California native Amar Khalil has come into his own in 2005 debuting a new album and musical artistry - a neo-soul, inspirational style that blends classic R&B and a little gospel, a touch of funk and a modest bit of hip hop with a whole lot of silky smooth soul. An accomplished singer who can handle lead and background vocals and improvisation equally well, Amar is an all-around talent as a songwriter, musician, dancer and actor. His rich vocal blends generally favor a very lyrical and introspective rhythm and blues, soulful approach reminiscent of his childhood favorites Donny Hathaway, the Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder. "...a fine blend of gospel, R&B and soul that includes excellent original material"

Amar's debut album, Where There's A Will There's A Way, is wrought with a smooth style and robust beats that make him a Bay Area favorite. His work celebrates fine songwriting and boasts a flavorful, tantalizing sound that will engage listeners with every riff and chorus. His silky tones continually surprise listeners with just enough edge to keep them moving to the beat. Without question, he is an artist who cannot be categorized in just one genre as, just when you think you've discovered his niche; he switches directions from contemporary to funk or R&B to hip hop-flavored gospel. With the 2005 release, Where There's A Will There's A Way, has already received wide acclaim with plans to begin a US promotional tour in early 2006 < Where There's A Will There's A Way > is an inspirational and classy debut from this newcomer. This is only the first of many more to come.

A bonafide musical prodigy, Amar polished his strong vocal skills while touring the world singing with his accomplished high school choir, "The Castleers." He solidified his professional musical relationship with the Bay Area music scene with repeat performances in the internationally acclaimed San Francisco musical revue, "Beach Blanket Babylon" and collaborations with some of the best and most successful entertainers in the music industry including background vocals, choreography and touring with Con Funk Shun member and successful solo artist, Michael Cooper and top female group En Vogue. He has done session work with Foster/McElroy of 2-Tuff-Enuff Productions, jazz saxophonist J. Spencer, Dwayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Toné, Raphael Saadiq, rap artist Richie Rich and a host of other performers.

Amar has played clubs, concerts and festivals and has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Japan. Amar has been with the Tony's since 1997 and has recently completed an 18-month tour as lead vocalist of the platinum-plus group, Tony Toni Toné, receiving rave reviews in Japan and the US and appearances on the BET Soundstage, the House of Blues and many other venues.

Amar's vocal magic and distinctive musical approach has continued to evolve and these days, his tight harmonies and tasteful repertoire are winning over fans across the country. "He has revealed himself as an eloquent interpreter of time and emotions engaging listeners on each < Where There's A Will There's A Way > track." Review: - Don’t usually take too much notice of intro’s Where there's a Will there's a Way - Intro  but when you hear this one, and you know that Jamie Hawkins has something to do with it, you become extremely optmistic, and in this case not disappointed.

Higher is upbeat sweet voiced, catchy, mildly funky and inspirational. I See You is another strongly catchy and infectious track.  Thank You has some interesting things going on in its instrumentation, but again there is something extremely likeable in the vocals, the sweetness, apart from being heartfelt the lyrics don’t have much going for it on this one.

Sunny Day has been getting big plays in recent weeks in the UK, a midtempo feel good record of optimism.  Can't Stay Away, again driven, by the message, more powerful on the beats.  Solitary is the track that is doing it for me, catchy, strong lyrics.  Quickly brings it right down into a georgeous ballad.

All of the full length cuts are strong, sweet vocals, excellently constructed, gospel driven and one for repeat plays. I wish this young talent well.

Tracks: -1. Where there's a Will there's a Way - Intro ,2. Higher ,3. I See You ,4. Thank You ,5. Prayer 4 Daddy ( Jalani & Jalen ) ,6. Sunny Day ,7. Where there's a Will there's a Way – Interlude ,8. Can't Stay Away ,9. Solitary ,10. Quickly ,11. Prayer 4 Daddy ( Jalani & Jalen ) Out - tro

Teddy Houston – Are you ready www.teddyhouston.com

Info: - What is most impressive about new, much sought after vocalist Teddy Houston is his uncanny ability to reach people through his music. His unique delivery of soulful tunes like Could It Be? And Just Hangin On gently persuades the listeners to look inward and realize their deepest feelings.

The Port Arthur, Texas native grew up in a family in which music played an integral role. “My mother had eclectic taste in music.” This early exposure and its uplifting effect influenced Houston to take on an industry that is, at best difficult to break into. But this gifted baritone remains focused, and is as confident about his future as is his baritone crisp. His versatility is readily evident in his rendition of old school, contemporary, and gospel; sweetened with a twist of hip-hop flavor.

While music lovers familiar with his music compare him to the late great Barry White and Arthur Prysock, Houston remains grounded. “I am an optimist who wants to touch, uplift, and motivate people by communicating with them through music; the universal language”. His long awaited CD contains smooth ballads as well as infectious dance tracks, including the hard hitting Revolving Door, Let’s Dance, and You and I, and the alluring title cut, Are You Ready?

Houston and his brother John write and co-produce all their lyrics. He credits John with being the “core” of all his musical ventures. “John is my musical ambassador. He facilitates collaborations with other entertainers in the industry and is always thinking forward to our next project”.

Teddy Houston believes that we exist to encourage, affirm and serve one another. “God has commissioned us to do so and provided the tools with which to accomplish it. My tool is my music”.

Bio Written by Duane Wilkins Copyright 2006”

Review: - Some great tunes on here from the strong voiced teddy Houston, from the opening Just Hangin On which is infectious in the chorus, above the excellent deep vocals and some great instrumentation.

Revolving Door picks it up strong bass line, guitar, great interplay on the vocals, with Sissy peoples. You and I Remix is heading towards, or reminds me of, deep vocalled gospel house (though its not a house track in this form), but it doesn’t quite get there for me.  Are You Ready is a bluesy moody duet.  Dreamworld is a slow ballad that builds in a gospel fashion, particularly the church keys.

Let's Dance is as funky as it gets, an upbeat goodtime tune, two mixes on show Let's Dance Extended. Could It Be starts as a spoken word but grows into a very strong piece indeed. You and I is midtempo, funky, gospel overtones, sounding a bit 80’s maybe but one of my favourite cuts.  Just Be You is a simple piano led ballad, , like a gospel Let it be, maybe?, with  Sissy on lead, but also containing some strong vocals from teddy.

Some excellent vocal mements for those that like a deep and soulful baritone.

Tracks: -1. Just Hangin On, 2. Revolving Door, 3. You and I Remix, 4. Are You Ready, 5. Dreamworld ,6. Let's Dance, 7. Could It Be ,8. You and I ,9. Let's Dance Extended, 10. Just Be You ,11. Precious Lord

BC Candyman – Love Letters http://www.bcswangmusic.com/

Info: - "Are you craving the sweetness from love? Then let the Candyman help you get in the mood with these strong love ballads. You can't go wrong. Let B.C. get the vibe right with this music - guiding you through a night of love and romance." - B.C.

In every generation, a singer emerges who seamlessly blends sensuality and sensitivity into a singular persona. Today, B.C. is that man. Don't be quick to place him in a category with Ginuwine, Tank and Usher just because of his looks and physique. B.C.'s sensual masculinity and smooth vocals set him apart from all the rest. B.C. expresses his innermost feelings through his lyrics, staying in tune with the needs, wants and desires of women. "I want my music to set the mood for romance and love making," he states.

As one of seven children in a musically oriented family, B.C. developed an ardent love for music that determined his destiny. Influenced by the early days of Prince and R.Kelly, B.C.'s career in music didn't begin n earnest until high school. Over the years, B.C. has endured more than his share of disappointment - from the ill management of his first vocal quartet IV Xample in `94 to his solo debut on Red Ant Records in `99 when B.C. got caught in the crossfire of a corporate upheaval. Sadly, both albums were neglected. "I've learned a lot in the past few years, both creatively and on a business level," B.C. recalls. Though this was all traumatic, the singer/songwriter didn't let it diminish what he was brought into this world to do. "You never know what's around the corner for you. The Lord has his own plan and you have to let it ride out."

This time around, B.C. re-introduces his long-awaited sophomore CD, Candyman, which he primarily wrote and produced himself except for "You're Always With Me" (produced and written by Runni Rae and Gen Ruben), "Old-Fashioned Love Letter" (co-penned with Jeff Cruthers) and "Where Is the Love" (co-written with Ron Harris).

This ambitious collection of 12 tracks is a continuation of B.C.'s musical explorations that evoke thought and emotion, stressing the things that matter most in relationships. "There are so many distractions right now and a lot of changes taking place," he explains. "Many songs have moved away from the things that are still important in a relationship: honesty, communication and respect." B.C. makes music that is deeply personal, yet universal. "Most of my songs are my own life, but I also get inspired by everything...you...me...everyone. I want people to grow with this CD and I want to bridge the gap that's missing in R&B music today."

Candyman is B.C.'s most accomplished and most accessible work yet. The opening song and title track, "Candyman," will leave lovers fantasizing, followed closely by the sexy, upbeat "Sugar Daddy." "Where Is the Love" is a reaffirming love song about keeping your word and being true to your heart. It moves on to an exhilarating song of new love, titled "My Girl," then the beautiful, heart-filling "You're Always With Me."

Just as B.C. gets smooth and sensual, he can also get downright nasty on the sex-you-down remix of "Why-O-Why," originally a single from his 1999 Solo project. Let the music and lyrics of "Let Me Count the Ways" lead you into a night of passion where nothing else matters in this world. Overall this is a well-rounded love album with a pinch of different flavors in "Let's Simplify" and the reggae-party feel of "Then They Come" (featuring special guest, Screwface).

B.C.'s otherwise smooth and romantic Candyman CD yet ends with the highly motivated "Paypadays," a song that all artists can relate to at any point in their career.  (January, 2005)

Review – Wow, there are a couple of slow jams to die for on here, Candyman and Suga Daddy certainly create a mood, sparse beats but heavy prominent vocals – two great tracks.   Simplify , produced & written by: B. Chevis, is more upbeat, with prominent beat, will find a home in an R’n’B or Soul room in the UK. Where is the love, produced by: Ron Harris, written by B. Chevis & Ron Harris, straight out of the Isleys, another love ballad, good but not quite as strong as the earlier two.

Creepin , My Girl, keeps the pace down, variations on a theme, stretching the vocals some and wringing out all that there is in relationships.  Let me count ,produced R written by: B. Chevis, has something about the old skool in its construction.

Then they come   produced & written by: B. Chevis (F/ Screwface), takes a different direction, feel good, upbeat, guest dancehall rap by Screface, one for the dancehalls.  Then we wide down, back in familiar territory with Old fashioned loveletter,  Your Always With Me   produced by: Gen Ruben, written by Runni Rae & Gen Ruben, Why o Why.

Certainly strong in the ballad territory, the later tracks are fine but it is the first two that I find more contemporary, and more fitting for todays marketplace.

Michael Roach – I Betcha www.michaelroach.com

Update Sept 06  - Just to say that this album now has backing, has been repackaged and released properly through Michael’s Stelle Records – available from www.stellarecords.com or www.michaelroachband.com One track Hank Ballards Lets go has been reworked from the original below. Look out for the Michael Roach Band on the road

Info: -Michael Roach, one of thirteen children born to Ted and Sadie Roach of Washington, D.C., USA, sings and plays guitar in an East Coast style of blues that dates back to the 1920s. After spending several years learning directly from such well known figures as John Jackson, John Cephas and Jerry Ricks, Michael Roach has developed his own style and is now an exceptional performer. He interacts with his audience and he entertains as he plays.

Over the past 20 years, Michael has conducted numerous workshops throughout the USA and Europe.  As a cultural arts performer, Michael has promoted African-American culture through the use of blues music.  He has lectured for the Smithsonian Institute (USA), Oxford University (UK) and more recently at the University of Metz (France).  In July 2004, he was involved in the organization of a conference held at the University of Gloucestershire (UK) called "Overseas Blues - European Perspectives on African American Music".  He is the founder of the European Blues Association and serves as its Development Officer, Newsletter Editor, Director and Guitar Instructor for the organizations annual Blues Week 2000 - 2005 programme (a week of lectures, guitar, harmonica, piano/keyboards and vocals tuition) at Exeter University (2000/2004) and the University of Northampton (2005).  Michael also presented "Deep Blue", a three part series on blues music featured on BBC Radio 4 in March 2003.  It is Michael's communication skills together with his musicianship that has enabled him to bring about a greater understanding of blues music and the Black experience.

Review – Michael is now a leading light on the UK Blues scene from his acoustic Blues performances, his knowledge, his tuition and his involvement with the European Blues Association and the Archive of African American Music. Also head of Stella records.

This forthcoming release therefore represents a departure, into the realms of Southern Deep Soul which will be a precursor to a forthcoming tour with PP Arnold………..and it suits him well, and is a well produced romp through Sixties Soul.  The instrumentation and backing is First Class and prusumably made up with a strong representation from Michael’s Blues contacts.

Downtrodden Woman is a strong opener, strong vocals excellent backing.  I Betcha is mellower sweeter on the guitar and vocals too, and one of the best for me, the way the horns hold back and then hit home, and then the organ fills in, superb track.  Baby No No No is fastpaced and more big band.  Over and Over brings the blues back in.

Back up North now for the rendition of People Get Ready, nice choice of song, nice sax break but doesn’t work as well as some of the others. By contrast, maybe the stronger Blues influences, I pity the Fool works much better.  Every track has roots in sixties soul but nearly every one offers something different, an I would guess that every track means something different and equally strong to Michael.  Say the wrong thing for example evokes an image within me, maybe of the thoughtful emotive interlude in a late late sixties soundtrack.

She Said is probably the strongest vocally as he gets inside the lyrics.   Straight Up is the funkiest with heavy Blues style vocal, and some funky horns.  Three Long Years is pretty much spoken , a standard Blues or Southern Style lyric overa fastpaced backbeat.  Thrill on the Hill rocks into the sunset.

I hope that the album in this direction does come out and that the tour does happen as Michael has much to offer in this direction.

Rachael Calladine – Life Love & Gossip www.rachaelcalladine.com www.kwerk.net

Rachael began singing professionally at the age of 17 with local dixieland jazz groups and an 18-piece big band. This baptism of fire gave her a wide repertoire of jazz material and she soon started writing original material, which in turn led to a broadening out of Rachael’s taste and a move into more soul-based writing and performing.

A short spell working as a nurse left her with a desire to gain a wider experience of life and Rachael joined the Police in her early 20s. But the lure of the stage was too strong, and Rachael left to take up a professional singing career. A move to London and the resulting gigs on the capital’s jazz circuit led to a recording deal in Amsterdam, where she recorded an album in 1996. “Unfortunately the album was never released, but it was a great learning experience in studio recording technique” says Rachael. Returning to London, Rachael began to develop a healthy & loyal following on the live jazz circuit throughout the UK.

At a gig in London’s 606 jazz club, she was approached by legendary producer Narada Michael Walden, which resulted in a recording session, and the beginning of a friendship which continues today. In 1999 she became a member of a gospel choir and sang backing vocals for the Spice Girls last UK tour. Songwriting experiments continued, and in 2002 the song “La La Li” was licensed by influential DJs Gilles Peterson, for his “Worldwide Vol. 2” compilation, and Germany’s Rainer Truby, for his “Glucklich Vol. 5” album, and subsequently became a dancefloor favourite of jazz DJs throughout the world.

Rachael’s growing reputation led to a week long residency at Ronnie Scotts jazz club in Soho, London in July 2002, where she has since appeared on an annual basis. In September 2004 she joined Geoff Wilkinson’s hip-hop/jazz group Us3 and went on to perform over 50 gigs in 14 countries with them over the next twelve months. This led to writing and recording sessions in Geoff’s East London studio, and Rachael’s debut album “Life, Love and Gossip” was born. Co-writing with a tight funky team of keyboard players Neil Angilley (Snowboy, Down To The Bone, Us3), Jim Watson (Incognito, Zero 7, Katie Melua) and bass player Level Neville Malcolm (Us3, Real People) gave the album an intimate warm and soulful feeling throughout.

Away from music, Rachael’s interests include yoga, running, and weight training. She has a black belt in the martial art of Sanchou, and taught weekly classes in London for 2 years.

In Rachael’s own words:- “I have been waiting a long time to make this album. I didn’t want to make a record revisiting jazz standards as there are already many great performances. I wanted to make some new music, and although I have a background in jazz, I wanted to draw on my large collection of influences from Sarah Vaughan, George Benson, Joyce, and Michael Jackson to rock, classical and Brazilian music. I want to make good quality music that makes people feel good, but can also prompt thought and emotion”.

Review : - Rachael and geoff have constructed a well crafted album that will appeal to new fans, fans of US3 and should break through to the Soul contingent and markets beyond.  Sunshine [LISTEN] is a melodic easy going, feel good, midtempo, slightly retro offering.  Higher [LISTEN] is a more sultry ballad against a bckdrop of some nice beats.  Ain’t Got Enough Love [LISTEN] has a funkier bassline containing what is a recurring theme in a lot of tracks, a hook that you can latch onto and sticks.  Changes [LISTEN] again with hook, harder vocals this time and funky keyboards.

The album after four tracks is kicking alone, with some soulful vocals, jazz and funk tinges, yet moody and contemporary.  I Believe [LISTEN] continues in a high view with a downbeat chilled out ballad.  Through Your Eyes [LISTEN] is great instrumentally but it is sufficiently laid back to let some strong vocals come through.  Nothing wrong with the next few tracks either except that they have to live against some very strong earlier cuts, With You [LISTEN], the more upbeat Picking You Up [LISTEN], the finger pointing Liar [LISTEN].

Be Free [LISTEN] is worthy of mention, more of a neo soul feel to the vocal delivery.  Let Him Go [LISTEN]  has a jazzier delivery but still with a retro soul feel. Concludes with some strong beats and sultry vocals, though I felt a bit messy, on Fantasy [LISTEN]

A very solid album, recommended.

Tracks: -01. Sunshine [LISTEN], 02. Higher [LISTEN] ,03. Ain’t Got Enough Love [LISTEN] ,04. Changes [LISTEN], 05. I Believe [LISTEN] , 06. Through Your Eyes [LISTEN], 07. With You [LISTEN] ,08. Picking You Up [LISTEN] ,09. Liar [LISTEN], 10. Be Free [LISTEN], 11. Let Him Go [LISTEN], 12. Fantasy [LISTEN]

Gum Drop – Hi Falutin’ http://www.alteredvibes.com/

Release date 3 April 2006 - Gum Drop drop the deep funk with the raw soul with nu science in a vintage style. Randolph Matthews (voice) and Rob Mac (instruments and production) experiment with the sonics with a little help from fellow studio residents Lucy Wilkins (violin) and Matt Smooth (drums) on a mission to save the world from anaesthetized saccharine soul ...

“Despite being an integral part of the UK hip hop scene, musical chameleon Rob Mac has happily spread himself beyond the genre, taking in folk, soul, jazz and even rock in his various projects in the past decade. Having gained notoriety as co-promoter of the infamous Scratch club nights, with long time friend Matt Smooth, the pair decided to roll up their sleeves, hit the studio and commence a myriad of collaborations, most of which grew from their live outfit, Speeka. Since then the fertile duo have produced a number of offspring, including downbeat combo Jumbonics (for Tru Thoughts), Clean, The How, Imperial, and then finally production for poet and raconteur, Roger Robinson.

The Roger Robinson connection introduced Rob Mac to the Altered Vibes family. As a fan of the label’s output and open-minded musical outlook, it seemed the perfect place to represent what is, in essence, Rob’s first solo project: Gum Drop.”

I like this, mellow groovy beats and a couple of hot tracks, It’s on is the one for me, which is funk driven a la Sly, moody with Norman Anderson on vocals.

An album laden with mellow beats in general, but picks up real funky on the more upbeat cuts like Step by Step which features Jason Todd of Def Harmonic. Generally its current but full of retro beats and some cool jazz. Keeps on Burning 2 has a groove right out of funkadelics One Nation.

The album features a whole bunch of London’s finest, instrumentally good, conceptually good, the vibe is good, a refreshing album. Randolph Matthews features on a couple of tracks, coming up for air being the best.

Foreign Beggars ft Ohno & Dubbledge – Slow Broiled Ilk http://www.foreignbeggars.com/

Release date 2 May 2006, a 2nd instalment from their forthcoming albums. Slow Boiled ft Ohno is an electronic hip hop item. Heavy bass attack destined to do some dancehall damage.  Backdraught, totally different, more thoughtful and the best track in my view, futuristic in approach and abstract rhyming patterns. Hot Plate is super fast, too fast for me really.  The first two tracks are alright but probably outside the limits for the soul consciousness readers and for the broader minded only.

Mocky ft Feist – Fightin away the tears www.mockyrecordings.com

Release date 3 April 2006, Canadian born Mocky has worked with the likes of Jamie Liddell and Taylor Savvy, here teaming up with Leslie Feist. Mocky is known for his soulful, cross genre music and clue d up lyrics, and gigs wil be forthcoming.  This is a rather twee pop ditty, on a moderate jazzy tip. Bit too lightweight for me and vocals not strong enough, maybe could be hardened up in a mix

Black I – For you www.blackimusic.com www.pwientertainment.com

Info: BLACK I is preparing for the release of their debut CD, tentatively titled "PLEASURE"É.this long-awaited album took over a year to complete, and is the creative collaboration of San Francisco bay-area vocalist/drummer ERIC BROWN and New York producer/bassist MICHAEL GRIOT. A New York area recordĐrelease party is tentatively scheduled for late fall, with the actual album dropping shortly after. The project also features many notable guests; including inspired contributions by Teddy Crockett, Russell Gunn, Bruce Williams, Nick Rolfe, Michel Hill, Shantena Fleming, Kenny Whitehead, and an inspired guest vocal appearance by UK soul legend Omar!

In 2002, ERIC BROWN moved to NYC from the Bay area, and hit New York City's live music scene in venues like the VILLAGE UNDERGROUND and JOEŐS PUB... On an R&B/gospel gig, he met bassist MICHAEL GRIOT; an independent producer, and busy tour musician...almost immediately, they began writing and recording at GRIOTŐS studio (ATTICA). They quickly became a highly-regarded "live" rhythmn section while touring behind UK soul legend OMAR, and the stage was set!!

"PLEASURE" is their highly-anticipated debut release from PWI ENTERTAINMENT, scheduled here and abroad for FALL 2005...OMAR himself has committed to backing vocals on at least one track; Grammy-nominated trumpeter Russell Gunn(who also tours with C-Lo) rips on two songs, as well as a catchy co-write and backing vocals by Philadelphia's own R&B royalty Kenny Whitehead.

"BLACK I is our way to express our love of our influences", says bassist Michael Griot, "through our instruments and our lyrics". Comparisons run the gamut: from Prince to Maxwell...from Curtis Mayfield to EWF..."we are basically doing up-tempo relationship songs on this record".

...Eric Brown moves his drum set to the front of the stage, adjusts his vocal mic and gives up a soulful rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt; his delivery is reminiscent of the best of many great R&B singers of the past...meanwhile, Griot's bass adventures and fearless musical direction guide this ship to inspired musical destinations...

THIS IS DRUM & BASS...DONE LIVE AND DIRECT!!”

Review:- This arrived before my holiday and got repeat plays on my journey, taken me a while to get back to the review for which I apoligise- but there’s only me!

I have sensed quite a bit of Drum and Bass influences, nuances and feel creeping into neo soul lately, I don’t treat this with trepidation but I suspect a lot of UK soul might, lets wait and see. However this is not necessarily overtly full on D&B, just the best bits, in fact its quite mellow and definitely soulful, and I’m liking it more with each listen.

please u is heavy on the bass, horns groove in and out giving a jazzy feel, spokenish vocal yet catchy, excellent, been playing this a lot. For you, again lots of beat, bit of their own style and uniqueness is emerging, bit of Sly about it too.  Puppy love is only an interlude but I mention it because it is heavy on the Cello which is another interesting feature of these guys, or Michael Griot more particularly.

Peace of mind is less D&B, more ballad, still hits of sly but also curtis too, in fact theres a bunch of stuff in here, church organ, steel guitar, female vocals, yet its not to complex at all.  Pleasure is back to Drum and Bass, more upbeat, bits of this and bits of that, it’s like Drum and Bass with Soul keeping it in check (and not Drum and Bass getting lost on gimmicks and electronic wizardry).

Sweet like the sun is like mellow D&B, in ballad stylee.  Family affair ft Omar is a top cut, upbeat and one that the Uk could like with the beat and the fact that it is Omar. No more is another upbeat track that the UK will go for with some jazzy trumpets and persistent best.

A bit of a breath of fresh air about this, like it a lot.  I hear they’ve been picked up by Teddy Crockett’s stable and I can see why, they fit perfectly into that.

Steve Wallace – Come with tha Real  www.stevewallacemusic.com

Info: - Steve Wallace is a brilliant musician, a thoughtful songwriter, and an inspiring producer with a dynamic vocal instrument with a broad range of expression. His music has a classic feel and is also youthful and relevant to the present generation, spiritual and socially conscious without being preachy. Often he is compared by others with the legendary Stevie Wonder and Donnie Hathaway and as influences he also cites The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier, G. Puccini and L. V. Beethoven. With his intoxicating energy and positive outlook on life, Steve Wallace is a needed energy in our world and is definitely the next breakthrough artist on the music scene.

"Steve's beats can mosdef get you Chicago stepping--while sensitive melodies are a soundtrack for urban seduction."  -GORDON CHAMBERS /Producer-Songwriter-Artist

"In music what sets an artist apart from his peers has to be their unique style, their ability to convey their message so you can feel what they feel. To accomplish this kind of feat it takes a lot of talent. One of the many things that is striking about Steve Wallace is his vocal versatility. From the head nodding title track (Come with the real) to the house groovy "Goodbye", Steve's voice is right at home with any kind of instrumentation. Steve Wallace sets himself apart from many of his peers with his uncanny knack create fresh original grooves. Steve Wallace is the type of musical mystic that will keep the nu-soul movement moving progressively forward. This CD is just too damn good."

Review: - A recommended release from the Ambassador of Urban Soul, Steve Wallace.  Steve a very interesting and talented guy from Chicago and now out of New York. The album very much follows or sets its own direction, or Steve’s direction, based on his own experiences. Will appeal to both an Urban and a Soulful audience.

Come with tha real! Kicks od in a catchy upbeat, instant style.  I've been searchin' is mellower, jazzier, great vocals and a track I’m really feelin, maybe that’s what we’re all doing, maybe we all try to hard, just let it happen.  Forgetting marketplaces, both US and Uk, styles and trends, this is my favourite piece.

Ventilation is more in the neo soul category, in vocal delivery and lyric style.  Another nice track.  That's how i know is a slow sweet ballad.  Do u love me? Is catchy and a bit more upbeat, one of two tracks recorded in Pasadena (as opposed to Brooklyn) with some nice samply bits (which I’m trying to recognise) in the backing.  Goodbye!* is instrumentally, vibes or something, lightly drum and bass, horn sample, and also catchy vocally, lots going on but not overpoweringly so.  The jacket song is also a top song, getting lots of interest, interesting personal lyric storyline.

i fell in love is a bittersweet, heartfel ballad.  To me is live and acoustic, simple yet effective.  Don't u leave*(feat Scipio) has harder beats and the sweet vocals contrast well with the harder beats and rap. The album mellows down with some execellent ballads, all offering something different, live jazzy feel, piano, excellent vocals - As u lie here... particularly with it’s deepness, thoughtfulness and warmth is a top cut.  Calling on U closes in a bit more upbeat easystyle mood.

An album that builds and grows the more attention you give to it and some seriously good tracks.

Demetrie Doiron – Closer

“I’ve always felt very connected to the Urban/R&B contemporary rhythms.”

Born into a world of music, Demetrie Doiron first began singing and playing the drums at a very early age for his church choir. In 1987, he co-wrote his first song entitled Crazy with an up and coming R&B artist, Ryan Steele. In the early 90s, Doiron accepted an internship at Pajamas Studios as a Studio Engineer and learned much about all aspects of the industry. In his free time he made some preliminary recordings at Sound Farm, Live Oaks, and Fantasy Studios located in the Bay Area and worked diligently on bringing it all together.

Doiron established his own studio, Protection Records, in 1995 with his good friend, Marcus Gore, AKA Emgee. Together they wrote, arranged, and produced several pieces.

Joining ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) in 1999, Doiron sent on to establish Don Amechi Muzic publishing in 2000 and later developed his own record label, DeMechi Music Group, in 2001.

In the fall of 2005 Doiron released his debut compilation, Closer. Individually writing, producing, engineering, and arranging each song on this CD, he focuses on the slower sounds of the R&B mainstream.

Doiron personally relates that Closer was inspired by the female relationships that occurred throughout his life, focusing on the emotions involved in breaking up and getting back together. He feels very passionately about his work and believes that in all aspects of life there is music and it is through these experiences that you essentially become more aware of your individual self.

You can purchase a copy of Closer at www.CDBaby.com or www.towerrecords.com. Doiron is currently working on his new album, In This Fo Life, which will be released soon.”

Before I start I would like to reiterate the point that I have made elsewhere that the bar for independent soul music has been raised over the last couple of years with some thoroughly professional and exciting sets – see some of the pages of this site for some examples.  I am hearing of individuals spending well in excess of $10,000 and upto $20,000 funding individual products, maybe more with some of the indie bands.  This is a serious personal outlay to recoup so product has to be top notch to compete, maybe a sad but financially driven fact.

So for an albums put together on keys and computers in a home studio has to be exceptional to break through.  I like the sound of a lot of beats and songs on this album but my overall impression is that it is the kind of album that is just a lttle bit behind.

As stated above this album is driven by personal experience and is commended for the storyline and lyrical content of breking uo and getting back together, all very emotive and heartfelt.  I find myself preferring the cuts with raps because they give just that little bit more edge.

The best tracks for me are Don't Playa Hate Say U Do and Do That Thang and Love & Pain.

The next album is being worked on and I wish Demetrie good luck with it.

Tracks: 1. Don't Playa Hate, 2. Lock Down feat. Ironic, 3. Listen 2, 4. Never Enuff, 5. Say U Do, 6. Closer, ,7. Pimpin 101, 8. Get Some ,9. Phone Calls
10. It Ain't Going Down 11. You & I,12. Do That Thang, 13. Love & Pain ,14. Free
15. Cold Blooded feat. ironic

Temika Moore – Moment of Truth www.temikamoore.com

“Temika's debut CD, Moment of Truth is a musical journey into the soul of an awe-inspiring talent. The title is derived from her personal journey to find peace and truth in her spiritual and professional life. What better title to introduce the listener to an intimate musical experience with Ms. Moore. Temika wants the listener to walk away with a sense of empowerment as stated in the third track of this CD, "No longer will I look for others to validate me, it's my life and I know what I want it to be-I'm so glad I found peace of mind!" These offerings are deeply personal and can be categorized as what she calls "so-jazz"-soulful contemporary jazz inspired music.

Temika Moore grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania perusing the family’s hi-fi stereo’s record case and found her self listening to her mother’s Natalie Cole and Earth Wind and Fire LP’s, grandpop’s 45’s of B.B King, grandmom’s Mahalia Jackson and Shirley Caesar 8-tracks and her aunt’s Clark Sisters and Hawkins Family albums. Growing up in a home with a southern-bred grandmother, it’s probably expected that most singers sung their first measure in somebody’s choir or gospel group. Well, you’re right. Temika’s no different in that respect. However, the realization that she could actually sing is the revelation.

Temika had her first solo at the age at 9 when the Baptist church she attended in North Philadelphia decided to start a children’s choir. The choir’s first public performance featured Temika’s rendition of the famous gospel hymn, Jesus Loves Me as sung by Whitney Houston in the Body Guard. After receiving a standing ovation and a request to perform in the church’s newly formed gospel ensemble, little did Temika know this would be the first of many experiences in her journey to become a performing artist and songwriter.

Temika was the youngest member of an all-adult Philadelphia quintet named, Rejoice. The group toured various churches performing and building a following. After the sudden illness and death of one of the group’s members, along with creative differences, the group disbanded. Meanwhile, as Temika started to become of age, and her musical interests became more diverse, she was making plans to hone her craft. Temika notes, “When you’re in church, everyone will tell you “sing baby...Amen, that girl has a voice” when their caught up in the moment. But the test is when you can go back and listen to a recording of that so-called awesome earth-shattering performance and still embrace what you heard with the same passion. You really have to know that you have what it takes.”

Temika made the decision to apply for acceptance into the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) where she attended with fellow industry classmates, Boyz II Men, Amel Larreuix, Fatin Danzler (Kindred), Black Thought and ?uest Love (the Roots), Mark Nelson (Az Yet), Lizz Fields and Christian McBride to name a few. While attending CAPA, Temika was afforded the opportunity to perform for many prestigious events as part of the CAPA Concert Choir. She has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra under director, Riccardo Mutti, Philadelphia Pops Orchestra under the direction of Peter Nero performed with the All-City Choir, Mayoral Inauguration of Ed Rendell, ABC Thanksgiving Day Parades, and a host of other notable venues. Temika was classically trained under the direction of the late David King and J.Donald Dumpson. Also, she was invited to join an all-female vocal quintet, initially named Collage formed by Michael McCary of Boyz II Men. At the time, the group was also being sought after by industry legend, Teddy Pendergrass. However, neither arrangement came to fruition. Feeling the affects of disappointment of a dream deferred and nearing graduation, Temika had to make a decision about her life-to pursue music or forgo the dream and go to college. The decision was made, and Temika decided to leave the group to attend college. Meanwhile, Temika graduated 13th in her graduating class with honors and was voted “Best Vocalist” that year with acceptance into the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

Temika initially applied to UMES as a Sociology/Pre-law major with intentions of becoming an entertainment attorney. However, as with any true musician, the call of music is always on your life no matter where you go, or how far you try to run from it. One day Temika walked into the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center on campus and headed directly for the piano room and started to sing. The director of the performing arts department, Dr. Gerald Johnson came into the room and asked who she was. The director smiled and said “I think we just found our first Ella Fitzgerald Scholarship recipient.” This was extremely timely and nothing but heavenly favor for Temika as she was still trying to find a way to finance her college education even at that moment. Temika was awarded and became the first recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald Music Scholarship. This propelled Temika back into the musical life she left behind in Philadelphia. At UMES, Temika learned to develop her sound and was introduced to jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaugh and Carmen McCrae by jazz ensemble director and Trumpeter, Dr. Richard Lamkin. Temika states “I enjoyed exploring music in a setting that was free of the traditional classical vocal instruction where vocal coaches only respect one genre of music and all others be damned. I was free to show expression, make faces, and it was okay to work the often awkward transition between head and chest voice in my own way.” After four years of study in preparation for the “real world,” Temika graduated Magna Cum Laude and was recognized as the University’s Most Outstanding Graduate armed with nothing more than faith and a tenacious will to succeed.

After attempts to pursue a “stable career” in the corporate sector with ever-present threats of lay-offs, disclosed and undisclosed racism, learning to navigate the stifling nature of corporate culture, along with the pressures of managing a busy performance schedule, Temika gave up her spiritual fight and decided to follow the musical calling on her life where she has performed as the opening act or has shared the stage with Cassandra Wilson, Roy Ayers, Marcus Johnson, Allyson Williams, Tony Terry, Selena Johnson, Melba Moore, Jean Carne and Jennifer Holiday. Shortly after leaving her position in a prestigious Washington, DC law firm, she decided to record her debut album, Moment of Truth. Frustrated with the process of trying to secure producers and writers on a shoe string budget and finding the right material for the project, Temika picked up her laptop and started writing. “Moment of Truth was birthed out of my journey to find my way,” says Temika. “There were a lot of personal struggles that were going on in my life at the time. I felt very strongly that there was more to life than what I had experienced.”

Temika Moore is among the many that have chosen to take the road more big label artists want to travel by becoming an independent warrior who writes manufactures, promotes and markets their music. Temika heads up Moore II Come Entertainment, the umbrella company handling many of the business aspects for Temika Moore, along with Pink Panna Music which serves as the publishing company for Temika Moore’s music. Temika is determined to continue to make music that is free from exploitation, political restraint and corporate control. “I can work a 9-5 with a steady paycheck if I want to be controlled and restrained, says the outspoken Temika Moore. If God gives us free will, who is another human being to impose their will for my life?”

Review: - This is a late but brief review of the debut album. It still sounds good and relevant though, particularly the funky The World Don't Revolve Around You, strong vocals and production. The  version of Summertime is also surprisingly individual and good.  Great sax work on the slow jazzy Peace of Mind.  With You is an emotive ballad.  Can't Give No Mo' ups the pace into a funky get down with a neo feel.  Everything Must Change is an exceptional jazz ballad that builds and builds.  I Love You (enough to Set You Free), Testimony and A Woman all continue in a strong vein and the quality doesn’t let up.  Holding On to You is an acoustic ballad.

A very good album that still sounds good some 4 years after release, and vocally very strong.

Tracks; -1. The World Don't Revolve Around You, 2. Summertime ,3.
