Info: -Richard Poindexter was born in the nation’s capital of Washington D.C and raised in Newport News, Virginia. He and his brother Bobby sang locally with groups such as The Swans, The Silver Moon Gospel Quintet and The Gems, with whom he first performed at New York’s famous Apollo Theatre. After graduating from Washington Carver High School, The Poindexter Brothers headed for the Big Apple hoping to find the streets paved with gold and to establish a successful career in the music business primarily as writers, arrangers and producers.

Amongst their catalogue of early work they penned and produced stand-out soul gems such as “Hypnotized” and “I’ll Be Sweeter” for Linda Jones, “She’s A Fox” for The Icemen (featuring Jimi Hendrix on guitar), “I Dig Your Act” for The O’Jays, and “Baby, Baby Please” for Timothy Wilson. “Baby, Baby Please” was first recorded however in 1965 by a New York vocal group called The Implements which included a young man by the name of David Turner, now of The Persuaders whose relationship with Richard Poindexter now stretches back some 40 years. David was also first to record “Look Over Your Shoulder” as a member of The Implements. This later became a hit record for The Escorts, another group on George Kerr’s growing and successful roster at that time. Richard and Bobby also recorded singles for Verve and Tuff as The Poindexter Brothers.

They formed The Persuaders primarily as a vehicle by which to showcase their growing reputations as writers, producers and nurturers of talent. The Persuaders were born out of another group called The Internationals that included Douglas “Smokey“ Scott, Jimmy Barnes and Charles Stodghill on whom they had already recorded “Too Sweet To Be Lonely” (The Poindexter Brothers also recorded a version on The O’Jays for Bell) and “My Beautiful Philosophy” for the D’Ore label. From a group called The Majestics, they acquired another vocalist from Richard’s home city of Newport News, Virginia by the name of Willie B.Holland.

The first album distributed by Atlantic and released on their own Win Or Lose label was entitled “Thin Line Between Love And Hate’’ and was a break-out success in both pop and soul markets. Aside from the now-classic title track, it also provided hit singles in “Peace In The Valley of Love” and “Love's Gonna Pack Up". The Persuaders run of success continued with their second album release, albeit with a new line-up that included an exciting singer named Tommy Hill. The album contained a cut called “Trying Girls Out” which although popular on its initial release was to get a new lease of life more than 20 years later when Jay-Z and Kanye West used the track on the remix of “Girls, Girls, Girls” for which Richard received a Platinum Disc. The hip-hop scene also gave new life to “Love’s Gonna Pack Up” which Will Smith heavily sampled the for the cut “Willow Is A Player” on 2002’s “Born To Reign” set.

The hits for The Persuaders slowed up as disco took hold but not before Richard and Bobby provided the two best songs on the last Persuaders album release on Calla in 1976 in the form of “Gambling On A Sure Shot” and “Trying To Love Two Women”. Both cuts were produced by Norman Harris and have that distinctive uptempo 70’s Philadelphia sound that was prevalent at the time and remain hugely popular on the dance floors to this day.

From the late 60’s and throughout the 1970’s Richard also wrote and produced Florence Ballard , The Manhattans, Dee Dee Warwick, Carl Hall, Pat Johnson, The Topics (featuring one-time Persuader Charles Stodghill), Tony Mason and The Young Gents. He also found his songs increasingly covered by artists ranging from The Lost Generation, Bloodstone, David Hudson, The Escorts and Teena Marie to the likes of H Town, The Pretenders and Annie Lennox, all of whom scored big in the 80’s and 90’s with “Thin Line Between Love And Hate”. It also became the basis for the story-line and title for a movie in 1996 starring Martin Lawrence.

Around the same time, Richard and Tommy Hill formed a new set of Persuaders featuring one-time stand-in Alexander Brown, who was first introduced to the group by Douglas “Smokey” Scott, and David Turner who had first worked with Richard as a member of The Implements back in the 60's. They regularly performed on classic soul reviews throughout the United States and this continued until Tommy’s sad and untimely death in 2002. It is all the more poignant therefore that Willie B.Holland, the only surviving member of the group to appear on the first two albums, agreed to appear on this CD. The album also introduces for the very first time on record, the powerhouse vocals of the latest member to join the group, Tony “Showtime” Riley who hails from Brooklyn, New York.

Richard Poindexter already has a place in soul music history from a career that now stretches back some 40 years. It is also evident from the new compositions that he wrote for "Made To Be Loved" that his special talent in being able to craft songs with strong melodies and memorable lyrics never abandoned him throughout some quiet and at times difficult years. The release of this CD is an opportunity to appreciate once again the creativity of one of soul music’s real unsung heroes and marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of The Persuaders.

The Persuaders are Richard Poindexter, Alexander Brown, David Turner and Tony "Showtime" Riley.

Original songs by Richard Poindexter are published by Mr.P.Music(BMI)and Persuaders Ltd.Inc (BMI).”

Review: - I find myself a little bit disappointed by this album, maybe I expected too much because of the groups pedigree, my own personal liking for male vocal grouips.  This feeling was probably enhanced because the first track A Woman Was Made to Be Loved is a killer, superb vocals, great tempo and feel.

After that the album contains some great vocal pieces as you’d expect, but there’s something about the album that doesn’t hang together quite right.  For me that is, but what do I know.

Never Stop Loving You starts off as if its going to be a great track, the lead is excellent, the opening bars leaves a great feeling of expectancy, but I dunno some of the backing bits don’t seem to come in right.  I think this track could be sooo good.  And that remains my feeling throughout the rest I’m afraid.

Don't Think I Won't Leave is my second favourite (after the first track) , a long and epic ballad built around the lead, excellent.  What About You is a sultry ballad.  All Up in Your Love  and Mama are for example more uptempo but the Persuaders have always been known for their ballads and the album consists mainly of them like The Wedding Song, You're the Best Thing.  I Don't Think So contains an excellent strained lead vocal.

Some great vocals on here, a couple of fine tracks, built on the classic old skool soul days and when all said and done I still wish there was more of this.

Tracks: - 1. A Woman Was Made to Be Loved, 2. Never Stop Loving You, 3. Don't Think I Won't Leave ,4. What About You, 5. All Up in Your Love ,6. Mama
7. As One ,8. The Wedding Song ,9. You're the Best Thing ,10. This Time Next Year, 11. She's Mine, 12. I Don't Think So,  13. A House Is Not a Home, 14. Hypnotized ,15. All the People

Info: - welcome all to the world of Amar Khalil. A hot new soulful R&B Inspirational Artist, From the music mecca Oakland California. Amar has teamed up with one of today's hottest young producer's, Jamie Hawkins. Son of the world's famous gospel family Walter & Tramaine Hawkins. Also, husband and producer of Hit recording artist Sunny Hawkins. We want to thank you 4 checking Amar Khalil out. Enjoy!

"AMAR KHALIL"
Oakland, California native Amar Khalil has come into his own in 2005 debuting a new album and musical artistry - a neo-soul, inspirational style that blends classic R&B and a little gospel, a touch of funk and a modest bit of hip hop with a whole lot of silky smooth soul. An accomplished singer who can handle lead and background vocals and improvisation equally well, Amar is an all-around talent as a songwriter, musician, dancer and actor. His rich vocal blends generally favor a very lyrical and introspective rhythm and blues, soulful approach reminiscent of his childhood favorites Donny Hathaway, the Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder. "...a fine blend of gospel, R&B and soul that includes excellent original material"

Amar's debut album, Where There's A Will There's A Way, is wrought with a smooth style and robust beats that make him a Bay Area favorite. His work celebrates fine songwriting and boasts a flavorful, tantalizing sound that will engage listeners with every riff and chorus. His silky tones continually surprise listeners with just enough edge to keep them moving to the beat. Without question, he is an artist who cannot be categorized in just one genre as, just when you think you've discovered his niche; he switches directions from contemporary to funk or R&B to hip hop-flavored gospel. With the 2005 release, Where There's A Will There's A Way, has already received wide acclaim with plans to begin a US promotional tour in early 2006 < Where There's A Will There's A Way > is an inspirational and classy debut from this newcomer. This is only the first of many more to come.

A bonafide musical prodigy, Amar polished his strong vocal skills while touring the world singing with his accomplished high school choir, "The Castleers." He solidified his professional musical relationship with the Bay Area music scene with repeat performances in the internationally acclaimed San Francisco musical revue, "Beach Blanket Babylon" and collaborations with some of the best and most successful entertainers in the music industry including background vocals, choreography and touring with Con Funk Shun member and successful solo artist, Michael Cooper and top female group En Vogue. He has done session work with Foster/McElroy of 2-Tuff-Enuff Productions, jazz saxophonist J. Spencer, Dwayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Toné, Raphael Saadiq, rap artist Richie Rich and a host of other performers.

Amar has played clubs, concerts and festivals and has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Japan. Amar has been with the Tony's since 1997 and has recently completed an 18-month tour as lead vocalist of the platinum-plus group, Tony Toni Toné, receiving rave reviews in Japan and the US and appearances on the BET Soundstage, the House of Blues and many other venues.

Amar's vocal magic and distinctive musical approach has continued to evolve and these days, his tight harmonies and tasteful repertoire are winning over fans across the country. "He has revealed himself as an eloquent interpreter of time and emotions engaging listeners on each < Where There's A Will There's A Way > track." Review: - Don’t usually take too much notice of intro’s Where there's a Will there's a Way - Intro  but when you hear this one, and you know that Jamie Hawkins has something to do with it, you become extremely optmistic, and in this case not disappointed.

Higher is upbeat sweet voiced, catchy, mildly funky and inspirational. I See You is another strongly catchy and infectious track.  Thank You has some interesting things going on in its instrumentation, but again there is something extremely likeable in the vocals, the sweetness, apart from being heartfelt the lyrics don’t have much going for it on this one.

Sunny Day has been getting big plays in recent weeks in the UK, a midtempo feel good record of optimism.  Can't Stay Away, again driven, by the message, more powerful on the beats.  Solitary is the track that is doing it for me, catchy, strong lyrics.  Quickly brings it right down into a georgeous ballad.

All of the full length cuts are strong, sweet vocals, excellently constructed, gospel driven and one for repeat plays. I wish this young talent well.

Tracks: -1. Where there's a Will there's a Way - Intro ,2. Higher ,3. I See You ,4. Thank You ,5. Prayer 4 Daddy ( Jalani & Jalen ) ,6. Sunny Day ,7. Where there's a Will there's a Way – Interlude ,8. Can't Stay Away ,9. Solitary ,10. Quickly ,11. Prayer 4 Daddy ( Jalani & Jalen ) Out - tro

Teddy Houston – Are you ready www.teddyhouston.com

Info: - What is most impressive about new, much sought after vocalist Teddy Houston is his uncanny ability to reach people through his music. His unique delivery of soulful tunes like Could It Be? And Just Hangin On gently persuades the listeners to look inward and realize their deepest feelings.

The Port Arthur, Texas native grew up in a family in which music played an integral role. “My mother had eclectic taste in music.” This early exposure and its uplifting effect influenced Houston to take on an industry that is, at best difficult to break into. But this gifted baritone remains focused, and is as confident about his future as is his baritone crisp. His versatility is readily evident in his rendition of old school, contemporary, and gospel; sweetened with a twist of hip-hop flavor.

While music lovers familiar with his music compare him to the late great Barry White and Arthur Prysock, Houston remains grounded. “I am an optimist who wants to touch, uplift, and motivate people by communicating with them through music; the universal language”. His long awaited CD contains smooth ballads as well as infectious dance tracks, including the hard hitting Revolving Door, Let’s Dance, and You and I, and the alluring title cut, Are You Ready?

Houston and his brother John write and co-produce all their lyrics. He credits John with being the “core” of all his musical ventures. “John is my musical ambassador. He facilitates collaborations with other entertainers in the industry and is always thinking forward to our next project”.

Teddy Houston believes that we exist to encourage, affirm and serve one another. “God has commissioned us to do so and provided the tools with which to accomplish it. My tool is my music”.

Bio Written by Duane Wilkins Copyright 2006”

Review: - Some great tunes on here from the strong voiced teddy Houston, from the opening Just Hangin On which is infectious in the chorus, above the excellent deep vocals and some great instrumentation.

Revolving Door picks it up strong bass line, guitar, great interplay on the vocals, with Sissy peoples. You and I Remix is heading towards, or reminds me of, deep vocalled gospel house (though its not a house track in this form), but it doesn’t quite get there for me.  Are You Ready is a bluesy moody duet.  Dreamworld is a slow ballad that builds in a gospel fashion, particularly the church keys.

Let's Dance is as funky as it gets, an upbeat goodtime tune, two mixes on show Let's Dance Extended. Could It Be starts as a spoken word but grows into a very strong piece indeed. You and I is midtempo, funky, gospel overtones, sounding a bit 80’s maybe but one of my favourite cuts.  Just Be You is a simple piano led ballad, , like a gospel Let it be, maybe?, with  Sissy on lead, but also containing some strong vocals from teddy.

Some excellent vocal mements for those that like a deep and soulful baritone.

Tracks: -1. Just Hangin On, 2. Revolving Door, 3. You and I Remix, 4. Are You Ready, 5. Dreamworld ,6. Let's Dance, 7. Could It Be ,8. You and I ,9. Let's Dance Extended, 10. Just Be You ,11. Precious Lord

BC Candyman – Love Letters http://www.bcswangmusic.com/

Info: - "Are you craving the sweetness from love? Then let the Candyman help you get in the mood with these strong love ballads. You can't go wrong. Let B.C. get the vibe right with this music - guiding you through a night of love and romance." - B.C.

In every generation, a singer emerges who seamlessly blends sensuality and sensitivity into a singular persona. Today, B.C. is that man. Don't be quick to place him in a category with Ginuwine, Tank and Usher just because of his looks and physique. B.C.'s sensual masculinity and smooth vocals set him apart from all the rest. B.C. expresses his innermost feelings through his lyrics, staying in tune with the needs, wants and desires of women. "I want my music to set the mood for romance and love making," he states.

As one of seven children in a musically oriented family, B.C. developed an ardent love for music that determined his destiny. Influenced by the early days of Prince and R.Kelly, B.C.'s career in music didn't begin n earnest until high school. Over the years, B.C. has endured more than his share of disappointment - from the ill management of his first vocal quartet IV Xample in `94 to his solo debut on Red Ant Records in `99 when B.C. got caught in the crossfire of a corporate upheaval. Sadly, both albums were neglected. "I've learned a lot in the past few years, both creatively and on a business level," B.C. recalls. Though this was all traumatic, the singer/songwriter didn't let it diminish what he was brought into this world to do. "You never know what's around the corner for you. The Lord has his own plan and you have to let it ride out."

This time around, B.C. re-introduces his long-awaited sophomore CD, Candyman, which he primarily wrote and produced himself except for "You're Always With Me" (produced and written by Runni Rae and Gen Ruben), "Old-Fashioned Love Letter" (co-penned with Jeff Cruthers) and "Where Is the Love" (co-written with Ron Harris).

This ambitious collection of 12 tracks is a continuation of B.C.'s musical explorations that evoke thought and emotion, stressing the things that matter most in relationships. "There are so many distractions right now and a lot of changes taking place," he explains. "Many songs have moved away from the things that are still important in a relationship: honesty, communication and respect." B.C. makes music that is deeply personal, yet universal. "Most of my songs are my own life, but I also get inspired by everything...you...me...everyone. I want people to grow with this CD and I want to bridge the gap that's missing in R&B music today."

Candyman is B.C.'s most accomplished and most accessible work yet. The opening song and title track, "Candyman," will leave lovers fantasizing, followed closely by the sexy, upbeat "Sugar Daddy." "Where Is the Love" is a reaffirming love song about keeping your word and being true to your heart. It moves on to an exhilarating song of new love, titled "My Girl," then the beautiful, heart-filling "You're Always With Me."

Just as B.C. gets smooth and sensual, he can also get downright nasty on the sex-you-down remix of "Why-O-Why," originally a single from his 1999 Solo project. Let the music and lyrics of "Let Me Count the Ways" lead you into a night of passion where nothing else matters in this world. Overall this is a well-rounded love album with a pinch of different flavors in "Let's Simplify" and the reggae-party feel of "Then They Come" (featuring special guest, Screwface).

B.C.'s otherwise smooth and romantic Candyman CD yet ends with the highly motivated "Paypadays," a song that all artists can relate to at any point in their career.  (January, 2005)

Review – Wow, there are a couple of slow jams to die for on here, Candyman and Suga Daddy certainly create a mood, sparse beats but heavy prominent vocals – two great tracks.   Simplify , produced & written by: B. Chevis, is more upbeat, with prominent beat, will find a home in an R’n’B or Soul room in the UK. Where is the love, produced by: Ron Harris, written by B. Chevis & Ron Harris, straight out of the Isleys, another love ballad, good but not quite as strong as the earlier two.

Creepin , My Girl, keeps the pace down, variations on a theme, stretching the vocals some and wringing out all that there is in relationships.  Let me count ,produced R written by: B. Chevis, has something about the old skool in its construction.

Then they come   produced & written by: B. Chevis (F/ Screwface), takes a different direction, feel good, upbeat, guest dancehall rap by Screface, one for the dancehalls.  Then we wide down, back in familiar territory with Old fashioned loveletter,  Your Always With Me   produced by: Gen Ruben, written by Runni Rae & Gen Ruben, Why o Why.

Certainly strong in the ballad territory, the later tracks are fine but it is the first two that I find more contemporary, and more fitting for todays marketplace.

Michael Roach – I Betcha www.michaelroach.com

Update Sept 06  - Just to say that this album now has backing, has been repackaged and released properly through Michael’s Stelle Records – available from www.stellarecords.com or www.michaelroachband.com One track Hank Ballards Lets go has been reworked from the original below. Look out for the Michael Roach Band on the road

Info: -Michael Roach, one of thirteen children born to Ted and Sadie Roach of Washington, D.C., USA, sings and plays guitar in an East Coast style of blues that dates back to the 1920s. After spending several years learning directly from such well known figures as John Jackson, John Cephas and Jerry Ricks, Michael Roach has developed his own style and is now an exceptional performer. He interacts with his audience and he entertains as he plays.

Over the past 20 years, Michael has conducted numerous workshops throughout the USA and Europe.  As a cultural arts performer, Michael has promoted African-American culture through the use of blues music.  He has lectured for the Smithsonian Institute (USA), Oxford University (UK) and more recently at the University of Metz (France).  In July 2004, he was involved in the organization of a conference held at the University of Gloucestershire (UK) called "Overseas Blues - European Perspectives on African American Music".  He is the founder of the European Blues Association and serves as its Development Officer, Newsletter Editor, Director and Guitar Instructor for the organizations annual Blues Week 2000 - 2005 programme (a week of lectures, guitar, harmonica, piano/keyboards and vocals tuition) at Exeter University (2000/2004) and the University of Northampton (2005).  Michael also presented "Deep Blue", a three part series on blues music featured on BBC Radio 4 in March 2003.  It is Michael's communication skills together with his musicianship that has enabled him to bring about a greater understanding of blues music and the Black experience.

Review – Michael is now a leading light on the UK Blues scene from his acoustic Blues performances, his knowledge, his tuition and his involvement with the European Blues Association and the Archive of African American Music. Also head of Stella records.

This forthcoming release therefore represents a departure, into the realms of Southern Deep Soul which will be a precursor to a forthcoming tour with PP Arnold………..and it suits him well, and is a well produced romp through Sixties Soul.  The instrumentation and backing is First Class and prusumably made up with a strong representation from Michael’s Blues contacts.

Downtrodden Woman is a strong opener, strong vocals excellent backing.  I Betcha is mellower sweeter on the guitar and vocals too, and one of the best for me, the way the horns hold back and then hit home, and then the organ fills in, superb track.  Baby No No No is fastpaced and more big band.  Over and Over brings the blues back in.

Back up North now for the rendition of People Get Ready, nice choice of song, nice sax break but doesn’t work as well as some of the others. By contrast, maybe the stronger Blues influences, I pity the Fool works much better.  Every track has roots in sixties soul but nearly every one offers something different, an I would guess that every track means something different and equally strong to Michael.  Say the wrong thing for example evokes an image within me, maybe of the thoughtful emotive interlude in a late late sixties soundtrack.

She Said is probably the strongest vocally as he gets inside the lyrics.   Straight Up is the funkiest with heavy Blues style vocal, and some funky horns.  Three Long Years is pretty much spoken , a standard Blues or Southern Style lyric overa fastpaced backbeat.  Thrill on the Hill rocks into the sunset.

I hope that the album in this direction does come out and that the tour does happen as Michael has much to offer in this direction.

Rachael Calladine – Life Love & Gossip www.rachaelcalladine.com www.kwerk.net

Rachael began singing professionally at the age of 17 with local dixieland jazz groups and an 18-piece big band. This baptism of fire gave her a wide repertoire of jazz material and she soon started writing original material, which in turn led to a broadening out of Rachael’s taste and a move into more soul-based writing and performing.

A short spell working as a nurse left her with a desire to gain a wider experience of life and Rachael joined the Police in her early 20s. But the lure of the stage was too strong, and Rachael left to take up a professional singing career. A move to London and the resulting gigs on the capital’s jazz circuit led to a recording deal in Amsterdam, where she recorded an album in 1996. “Unfortunately the album was never released, but it was a great learning experience in studio recording technique” says Rachael. Returning to London, Rachael began to develop a healthy & loyal following on the live jazz circuit throughout the UK.

At a gig in London’s 606 jazz club, she was approached by legendary producer Narada Michael Walden, which resulted in a recording session, and the beginning of a friendship which continues today. In 1999 she became a member of a gospel choir and sang backing vocals for the Spice Girls last UK tour. Songwriting experiments continued, and in 2002 the song “La La Li” was licensed by influential DJs Gilles Peterson, for his “Worldwide Vol. 2” compilation, and Germany’s Rainer Truby, for his “Glucklich Vol. 5” album, and subsequently became a dancefloor favourite of jazz DJs throughout the world.

Rachael’s growing reputation led to a week long residency at Ronnie Scotts jazz club in Soho, London in July 2002, where she has since appeared on an annual basis. In September 2004 she joined Geoff Wilkinson’s hip-hop/jazz group Us3 and went on to perform over 50 gigs in 14 countries with them over the next twelve months. This led to writing and recording sessions in Geoff’s East London studio, and Rachael’s debut album “Life, Love and Gossip” was born. Co-writing with a tight funky team of keyboard players Neil Angilley (Snowboy, Down To The Bone, Us3), Jim Watson (Incognito, Zero 7, Katie Melua) and bass player Level Neville Malcolm (Us3, Real People) gave the album an intimate warm and soulful feeling throughout.

Away from music, Rachael’s interests include yoga, running, and weight training. She has a black belt in the martial art of Sanchou, and taught weekly classes in London for 2 years.

In Rachael’s own words:- “I have been waiting a long time to make this album. I didn’t want to make a record revisiting jazz standards as there are already many great performances. I wanted to make some new music, and although I have a background in jazz, I wanted to draw on my large collection of influences from Sarah Vaughan, George Benson, Joyce, and Michael Jackson to rock, classical and Brazilian music. I want to make good quality music that makes people feel good, but can also prompt thought and emotion”.

Review : - Rachael and geoff have constructed a well crafted album that will appeal to new fans, fans of US3 and should break through to the Soul contingent and markets beyond.  Sunshine [LISTEN] is a melodic easy going, feel good, midtempo, slightly retro offering.  Higher [LISTEN] is a more sultry ballad against a bckdrop of some nice beats.  Ain’t Got Enough Love [LISTEN] has a funkier bassline containing what is a recurring theme in a lot of tracks, a hook that you can latch onto and sticks.  Changes [LISTEN] again with hook, harder vocals this time and funky keyboards.

The album after four tracks is kicking alone, with some soulful vocals, jazz and funk tinges, yet moody and contemporary.  I Believe [LISTEN] continues in a high view with a downbeat chilled out ballad.  Through Your Eyes [LISTEN] is great instrumentally but it is sufficiently laid back to let some strong vocals come through.  Nothing wrong with the next few tracks either except that they have to live against some very strong earlier cuts, With You [LISTEN], the more upbeat Picking You Up [LISTEN], the finger pointing Liar [LISTEN].

Be Free [LISTEN] is worthy of mention, more of a neo soul feel to the vocal delivery.  Let Him Go [LISTEN]  has a jazzier delivery but still with a retro soul feel. Concludes with some strong beats and sultry vocals, though I felt a bit messy, on Fantasy [LISTEN]

A very solid album, recommended.

Tracks: -01. Sunshine [LISTEN], 02. Higher [LISTEN] ,03. Ain’t Got Enough Love [LISTEN] ,04. Changes [LISTEN], 05. I Believe [LISTEN] , 06. Through Your Eyes [LISTEN], 07. With You [LISTEN] ,08. Picking You Up [LISTEN] ,09. Liar [LISTEN], 10. Be Free [LISTEN], 11. Let Him Go [LISTEN], 12. Fantasy [LISTEN]

Gum Drop – Hi Falutin’ http://www.alteredvibes.com/

Release date 3 April 2006 - Gum Drop drop the deep funk with the raw soul with nu science in a vintage style. Randolph Matthews (voice) and Rob Mac (instruments and production) experiment with the sonics with a little help from fellow studio residents Lucy Wilkins (violin) and Matt Smooth (drums) on a mission to save the world from anaesthetized saccharine soul ...

“Despite being an integral part of the UK hip hop scene, musical chameleon Rob Mac has happily spread himself beyond the genre, taking in folk, soul, jazz and even rock in his various projects in the past decade. Having gained notoriety as co-promoter of the infamous Scratch club nights, with long time friend Matt Smooth, the pair decided to roll up their sleeves, hit the studio and commence a myriad of collaborations, most of which grew from their live outfit, Speeka. Since then the fertile duo have produced a number of offspring, including downbeat combo Jumbonics (for Tru Thoughts), Clean, The How, Imperial, and then finally production for poet and raconteur, Roger Robinson.

The Roger Robinson connection introduced Rob Mac to the Altered Vibes family. As a fan of the label’s output and open-minded musical outlook, it seemed the perfect place to represent what is, in essence, Rob’s first solo project: Gum Drop.”

I like this, mellow groovy beats and a couple of hot tracks, It’s on is the one for me, which is funk driven a la Sly, moody with Norman Anderson on vocals.

An album laden with mellow beats in general, but picks up real funky on the more upbeat cuts like Step by Step which features Jason Todd of Def Harmonic. Generally its current but full of retro beats and some cool jazz. Keeps on Burning 2 has a groove right out of funkadelics One Nation.

The album features a whole bunch of London’s finest, instrumentally good, conceptually good, the vibe is good, a refreshing album. Randolph Matthews features on a couple of tracks, coming up for air being the best.

Foreign Beggars ft Ohno & Dubbledge – Slow Broiled Ilk http://www.foreignbeggars.com/

Release date 2 May 2006, a 2nd instalment from their forthcoming albums. Slow Boiled ft Ohno is an electronic hip hop item. Heavy bass attack destined to do some dancehall damage.  Backdraught, totally different, more thoughtful and the best track in my view, futuristic in approach and abstract rhyming patterns. Hot Plate is super fast, too fast for me really.  The first two tracks are alright but probably outside the limits for the soul consciousness readers and for the broader minded only.

Mocky ft Feist – Fightin away the tears www.mockyrecordings.com

Release date 3 April 2006, Canadian born Mocky has worked with the likes of Jamie Liddell and Taylor Savvy, here teaming up with Leslie Feist. Mocky is known for his soulful, cross genre music and clue d up lyrics, and gigs wil be forthcoming.  This is a rather twee pop ditty, on a moderate jazzy tip. Bit too lightweight for me and vocals not strong enough, maybe could be hardened up in a mix

Black I – For you www.blackimusic.com www.pwientertainment.com

Info: BLACK I is preparing for the release of their debut CD, tentatively titled "PLEASURE"É.this long-awaited album took over a year to complete, and is the creative collaboration of San Francisco bay-area vocalist/drummer ERIC BROWN and New York producer/bassist MICHAEL GRIOT. A New York area recordĐrelease party is tentatively scheduled for late fall, with the actual album dropping shortly after. The project also features many notable guests; including inspired contributions by Teddy Crockett, Russell Gunn, Bruce Williams, Nick Rolfe, Michel Hill, Shantena Fleming, Kenny Whitehead, and an inspired guest vocal appearance by UK soul legend Omar!

In 2002, ERIC BROWN moved to NYC from the Bay area, and hit New York City's live music scene in venues like the VILLAGE UNDERGROUND and JOEŐS PUB... On an R&B/gospel gig, he met bassist MICHAEL GRIOT; an independent producer, and busy tour musician...almost immediately, they began writing and recording at GRIOTŐS studio (ATTICA). They quickly became a highly-regarded "live" rhythmn section while touring behind UK soul legend OMAR, and the stage was set!!

"PLEASURE" is their highly-anticipated debut release from PWI ENTERTAINMENT, scheduled here and abroad for FALL 2005...OMAR himself has committed to backing vocals on at least one track; Grammy-nominated trumpeter Russell Gunn(who also tours with C-Lo) rips on two songs, as well as a catchy co-write and backing vocals by Philadelphia's own R&B royalty Kenny Whitehead.

"BLACK I is our way to express our love of our influences", says bassist Michael Griot, "through our instruments and our lyrics". Comparisons run the gamut: from Prince to Maxwell...from Curtis Mayfield to EWF..."we are basically doing up-tempo relationship songs on this record".

...Eric Brown moves his drum set to the front of the stage, adjusts his vocal mic and gives up a soulful rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt; his delivery is reminiscent of the best of many great R&B singers of the past...meanwhile, Griot's bass adventures and fearless musical direction guide this ship to inspired musical destinations...

THIS IS DRUM & BASS...DONE LIVE AND DIRECT!!”

Review:- This arrived before my holiday and got repeat plays on my journey, taken me a while to get back to the review for which I apoligise- but there’s only me!

I have sensed quite a bit of Drum and Bass influences, nuances and feel creeping into neo soul lately, I don’t treat this with trepidation but I suspect a lot of UK soul might, lets wait and see. However this is not necessarily overtly full on D&B, just the best bits, in fact its quite mellow and definitely soulful, and I’m liking it more with each listen.

please u is heavy on the bass, horns groove in and out giving a jazzy feel, spokenish vocal yet catchy, excellent, been playing this a lot. For you, again lots of beat, bit of their own style and uniqueness is emerging, bit of Sly about it too.  Puppy love is only an interlude but I mention it because it is heavy on the Cello which is another interesting feature of these guys, or Michael Griot more particularly.

Peace of mind is less D&B, more ballad, still hits of sly but also curtis too, in fact theres a bunch of stuff in here, church organ, steel guitar, female vocals, yet its not to complex at all.  Pleasure is back to Drum and Bass, more upbeat, bits of this and bits of that, it’s like Drum and Bass with Soul keeping it in check (and not Drum and Bass getting lost on gimmicks and electronic wizardry).

Sweet like the sun is like mellow D&B, in ballad stylee.  Family affair ft Omar is a top cut, upbeat and one that the Uk could like with the beat and the fact that it is Omar. No more is another upbeat track that the UK will go for with some jazzy trumpets and persistent best.

A bit of a breath of fresh air about this, like it a lot.  I hear they’ve been picked up by Teddy Crockett’s stable and I can see why, they fit perfectly into that.

Steve Wallace – Come with tha Real  www.stevewallacemusic.com

Info: - Steve Wallace is a brilliant musician, a thoughtful songwriter, and an inspiring producer with a dynamic vocal instrument with a broad range of expression. His music has a classic feel and is also youthful and relevant to the present generation, spiritual and socially conscious without being preachy. Often he is compared by others with the legendary Stevie Wonder and Donnie Hathaway and as influences he also cites The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier, G. Puccini and L. V. Beethoven. With his intoxicating energy and positive outlook on life, Steve Wallace is a needed energy in our world and is definitely the next breakthrough artist on the music scene.

"Steve's beats can mosdef get you Chicago stepping--while sensitive melodies are a soundtrack for urban seduction."  -GORDON CHAMBERS /Producer-Songwriter-Artist

"In music what sets an artist apart from his peers has to be their unique style, their ability to convey their message so you can feel what they feel. To accomplish this kind of feat it takes a lot of talent. One of the many things that is striking about Steve Wallace is his vocal versatility. From the head nodding title track (Come with the real) to the house groovy "Goodbye", Steve's voice is right at home with any kind of instrumentation. Steve Wallace sets himself apart from many of his peers with his uncanny knack create fresh original grooves. Steve Wallace is the type of musical mystic that will keep the nu-soul movement moving progressively forward. This CD is just too damn good."

Review: - A recommended release from the Ambassador of Urban Soul, Steve Wallace.  Steve a very interesting and talented guy from Chicago and now out of New York. The album very much follows or sets its own direction, or Steve’s direction, based on his own experiences. Will appeal to both an Urban and a Soulful audience.

Come with tha real! Kicks od in a catchy upbeat, instant style.  I've been searchin' is mellower, jazzier, great vocals and a track I’m really feelin, maybe that’s what we’re all doing, maybe we all try to hard, just let it happen.  Forgetting marketplaces, both US and Uk, styles and trends, this is my favourite piece.

Ventilation is more in the neo soul category, in vocal delivery and lyric style.  Another nice track.  That's how i know is a slow sweet ballad.  Do u love me? Is catchy and a bit more upbeat, one of two tracks recorded in Pasadena (as opposed to Brooklyn) with some nice samply bits (which I’m trying to recognise) in the backing.  Goodbye!* is instrumentally, vibes or something, lightly drum and bass, horn sample, and also catchy vocally, lots going on but not overpoweringly so.  The jacket song is also a top song, getting lots of interest, interesting personal lyric storyline.

i fell in love is a bittersweet, heartfel ballad.  To me is live and acoustic, simple yet effective.  Don't u leave*(feat Scipio) has harder beats and the sweet vocals contrast well with the harder beats and rap. The album mellows down with some execellent ballads, all offering something different, live jazzy feel, piano, excellent vocals - As u lie here... particularly with it’s deepness, thoughtfulness and warmth is a top cut.  Calling on U closes in a bit more upbeat easystyle mood.

An album that builds and grows the more attention you give to it and some seriously good tracks.

Tracks: -1. Intro (Tha Real), 2. Come with tha real! ,3. I've been searchin' ,4. Ventilation ,5. That's how i know, 6. Do u love me?* ,7. Goodbye!*

Demetrie Doiron – Closer

“I’ve always felt very connected to the Urban/R&B contemporary rhythms.”

Born into a world of music, Demetrie Doiron first began singing and playing the drums at a very early age for his church choir. In 1987, he co-wrote his first song entitled Crazy with an up and coming R&B artist, Ryan Steele. In the early 90s, Doiron accepted an internship at Pajamas Studios as a Studio Engineer and learned much about all aspects of the industry. In his free time he made some preliminary recordings at Sound Farm, Live Oaks, and Fantasy Studios located in the Bay Area and worked diligently on bringing it all together.

Doiron established his own studio, Protection Records, in 1995 with his good friend, Marcus Gore, AKA Emgee. Together they wrote, arranged, and produced several pieces.

Joining ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) in 1999, Doiron sent on to establish Don Amechi Muzic publishing in 2000 and later developed his own record label, DeMechi Music Group, in 2001.

In the fall of 2005 Doiron released his debut compilation, Closer. Individually writing, producing, engineering, and arranging each song on this CD, he focuses on the slower sounds of the R&B mainstream.

Doiron personally relates that Closer was inspired by the female relationships that occurred throughout his life, focusing on the emotions involved in breaking up and getting back together. He feels very passionately about his work and believes that in all aspects of life there is music and it is through these experiences that you essentially become more aware of your individual self.

You can purchase a copy of Closer at www.CDBaby.com or www.towerrecords.com. Doiron is currently working on his new album, In This Fo Life, which will be released soon.”

Before I start I would like to reiterate the point that I have made elsewhere that the bar for independent soul music has been raised over the last couple of years with some thoroughly professional and exciting sets – see some of the pages of this site for some examples.  I am hearing of individuals spending well in excess of $10,000 and upto $20,000 funding individual products, maybe more with some of the indie bands.  This is a serious personal outlay to recoup so product has to be top notch to compete, maybe a sad but financially driven fact.

So for an albums put together on keys and computers in a home studio has to be exceptional to break through.  I like the sound of a lot of beats and songs on this album but my overall impression is that it is the kind of album that is just a lttle bit behind.

As stated above this album is driven by personal experience and is commended for the storyline and lyrical content of breking uo and getting back together, all very emotive and heartfelt.  I find myself preferring the cuts with raps because they give just that little bit more edge.

The best tracks for me are Don't Playa Hate Say U Do and Do That Thang and Love & Pain.

The next album is being worked on and I wish Demetrie good luck with it.

Tracks: 1. Don't Playa Hate, 2. Lock Down feat. Ironic, 3. Listen 2, 4. Never Enuff, 5. Say U Do, 6. Closer, ,7. Pimpin 101, 8. Get Some ,9. Phone Calls
10. It Ain't Going Down 11. You & I,12. Do That Thang, 13. Love & Pain ,14. Free
15. Cold Blooded feat. ironic

Temika Moore – Moment of Truth www.temikamoore.com

“Temika's debut CD, Moment of Truth is a musical journey into the soul of an awe-inspiring talent. The title is derived from her personal journey to find peace and truth in her spiritual and professional life. What better title to introduce the listener to an intimate musical experience with Ms. Moore. Temika wants the listener to walk away with a sense of empowerment as stated in the third track of this CD, "No longer will I look for others to validate me, it's my life and I know what I want it to be-I'm so glad I found peace of mind!" These offerings are deeply personal and can be categorized as what she calls "so-jazz"-soulful contemporary jazz inspired music.

Temika Moore grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania perusing the family’s hi-fi stereo’s record case and found her self listening to her mother’s Natalie Cole and Earth Wind and Fire LP’s, grandpop’s 45’s of B.B King, grandmom’s Mahalia Jackson and Shirley Caesar 8-tracks and her aunt’s Clark Sisters and Hawkins Family albums. Growing up in a home with a southern-bred grandmother, it’s probably expected that most singers sung their first measure in somebody’s choir or gospel group. Well, you’re right. Temika’s no different in that respect. However, the realization that she could actually sing is the revelation.

Temika had her first solo at the age at 9 when the Baptist church she attended in North Philadelphia decided to start a children’s choir. The choir’s first public performance featured Temika’s rendition of the famous gospel hymn, Jesus Loves Me as sung by Whitney Houston in the Body Guard. After receiving a standing ovation and a request to perform in the church’s newly formed gospel ensemble, little did Temika know this would be the first of many experiences in her journey to become a performing artist and songwriter.

Temika was the youngest member of an all-adult Philadelphia quintet named, Rejoice. The group toured various churches performing and building a following. After the sudden illness and death of one of the group’s members, along with creative differences, the group disbanded. Meanwhile, as Temika started to become of age, and her musical interests became more diverse, she was making plans to hone her craft. Temika notes, “When you’re in church, everyone will tell you “sing baby...Amen, that girl has a voice” when their caught up in the moment. But the test is when you can go back and listen to a recording of that so-called awesome earth-shattering performance and still embrace what you heard with the same passion. You really have to know that you have what it takes.”

Temika made the decision to apply for acceptance into the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) where she attended with fellow industry classmates, Boyz II Men, Amel Larreuix, Fatin Danzler (Kindred), Black Thought and ?uest Love (the Roots), Mark Nelson (Az Yet), Lizz Fields and Christian McBride to name a few. While attending CAPA, Temika was afforded the opportunity to perform for many prestigious events as part of the CAPA Concert Choir. She has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra under director, Riccardo Mutti, Philadelphia Pops Orchestra under the direction of Peter Nero performed with the All-City Choir, Mayoral Inauguration of Ed Rendell, ABC Thanksgiving Day Parades, and a host of other notable venues. Temika was classically trained under the direction of the late David King and J.Donald Dumpson. Also, she was invited to join an all-female vocal quintet, initially named Collage formed by Michael McCary of Boyz II Men. At the time, the group was also being sought after by industry legend, Teddy Pendergrass. However, neither arrangement came to fruition. Feeling the affects of disappointment of a dream deferred and nearing graduation, Temika had to make a decision about her life-to pursue music or forgo the dream and go to college. The decision was made, and Temika decided to leave the group to attend college. Meanwhile, Temika graduated 13th in her graduating class with honors and was voted “Best Vocalist” that year with acceptance into the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

Temika initially applied to UMES as a Sociology/Pre-law major with intentions of becoming an entertainment attorney. However, as with any true musician, the call of music is always on your life no matter where you go, or how far you try to run from it. One day Temika walked into the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center on campus and headed directly for the piano room and started to sing. The director of the performing arts department, Dr. Gerald Johnson came into the room and asked who she was. The director smiled and said “I think we just found our first Ella Fitzgerald Scholarship recipient.” This was extremely timely and nothing but heavenly favor for Temika as she was still trying to find a way to finance her college education even at that moment. Temika was awarded and became the first recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald Music Scholarship. This propelled Temika back into the musical life she left behind in Philadelphia. At UMES, Temika learned to develop her sound and was introduced to jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaugh and Carmen McCrae by jazz ensemble director and Trumpeter, Dr. Richard Lamkin. Temika states “I enjoyed exploring music in a setting that was free of the traditional classical vocal instruction where vocal coaches only respect one genre of music and all others be damned. I was free to show expression, make faces, and it was okay to work the often awkward transition between head and chest voice in my own way.” After four years of study in preparation for the “real world,” Temika graduated Magna Cum Laude and was recognized as the University’s Most Outstanding Graduate armed with nothing more than faith and a tenacious will to succeed.

After attempts to pursue a “stable career” in the corporate sector with ever-present threats of lay-offs, disclosed and undisclosed racism, learning to navigate the stifling nature of corporate culture, along with the pressures of managing a busy performance schedule, Temika gave up her spiritual fight and decided to follow the musical calling on her life where she has performed as the opening act or has shared the stage with Cassandra Wilson, Roy Ayers, Marcus Johnson, Allyson Williams, Tony Terry, Selena Johnson, Melba Moore, Jean Carne and Jennifer Holiday. Shortly after leaving her position in a prestigious Washington, DC law firm, she decided to record her debut album, Moment of Truth. Frustrated with the process of trying to secure producers and writers on a shoe string budget and finding the right material for the project, Temika picked up her laptop and started writing. “Moment of Truth was birthed out of my journey to find my way,” says Temika. “There were a lot of personal struggles that were going on in my life at the time. I felt very strongly that there was more to life than what I had experienced.”

Temika Moore is among the many that have chosen to take the road more big label artists want to travel by becoming an independent warrior who writes manufactures, promotes and markets their music. Temika heads up Moore II Come Entertainment, the umbrella company handling many of the business aspects for Temika Moore, along with Pink Panna Music which serves as the publishing company for Temika Moore’s music. Temika is determined to continue to make music that is free from exploitation, political restraint and corporate control. “I can work a 9-5 with a steady paycheck if I want to be controlled and restrained, says the outspoken Temika Moore. If God gives us free will, who is another human being to impose their will for my life?”

Review: - This is a late but brief review of the debut album. It still sounds good and relevant though, particularly the funky The World Don't Revolve Around You, strong vocals and production. The  version of Summertime is also surprisingly individual and good.  Great sax work on the slow jazzy Peace of Mind.  With You is an emotive ballad.  Can't Give No Mo' ups the pace into a funky get down with a neo feel.  Everything Must Change is an exceptional jazz ballad that builds and builds.  I Love You (enough to Set You Free), Testimony and A Woman all continue in a strong vein and the quality doesn’t let up.  Holding On to You is an acoustic ballad.

A very good album that still sounds good some 4 years after release, and vocally very strong.

Temika Moore – Doing Just Fine http://www.le-eg.com/

Temika Moore’s style cleverly echoes elements reminiscent of old school R & B, Romantic Soul, Traditional Pop and Gospel music with respectful infusions of jazz. This musical cocktail sets the backdrop for Temika Moore’s sophomore cd, Doing Just Fine. It’s a pleasant surprise of unprejudiced use of sounds and styles that helped to shape Temika’s aural personality. It’s an organic experience. It’s spiritual. It’s funky. It’s jazzy. It’s folky. It’s soulful. Imagine; the refined soul of Anita Baker meets the experimental and deeply personal folk-style of Joni Mitchell who meets the inspirational-themed style of Yolanda Adams. Simply stated...it’s passionate.

Temika Moore’s sophomore cd, Doing Just Fine is her second installment as a songwriter and is a precursor to her spiritually uplifting, life-changing, audience-connecting live shows. She has quickly garnered a reputation as a songwriter with deep lyrical content and impressive melodic vocal arrangements. This project is the perfect follow-up to her debut project Moment of Truth. “Moment of Truth was about finding my way. Doing Just Fine is about accepting what I found and being okay with it,” says Temika. This time Temika stretches her songwriting capability, experiments with producing, and embraces the role of Executive Producer. “I am proud of the work on this project and hope listeners embrace the concepts and ideas embodied in this project as my contribution to the world in an effort to help encourage self-acceptance,” says Temika. Temika’s current body of work Doing Just Fine contains original compositions such as the head bopping, jazz-infused “Fruit” which is a welcomed breathe of fresh air from the usual man-bashing to which we’ve become accustomed, but actually celebrates the heart of a man. “Doing Just Fine” the title track, is an honest, hits you right-in-the-heart letter to a father who made the choice not to accept the role of parent and chose to leave his daughter to be raised without his presence or instruction in her life. “Come Sunday” is a reflective song that tells the story of Temika’s grandmother, Annie and her childhood memories of their times together. She also pays homage to the Isley Brother’s with a smoothed-out, romantic version of “Groove with You,” and a soul-stirring version of Seawind’s “Follow Your Road.” This project is the missing piece in your music collection.

This cd is for you if you have Sade’s Lover’s Deluxe, the Isley Brother’s Greatest Hits Vol.1, any album from the Gap Band, Phylllis Hyman’s Prime of My Life, Jill Scott’s Words & Sounds Vol.1, Lizz Wright’s Salt, Lalah Hathaway’s Heaven or Outrun the Sky, the Brand New Heavies first album with the vocals of N’Dea Davenport, or all of Anita’s Baker’s albums from The Songstress to You’re My Everything in your cd case, in your cd player or on your mp3 player, then this cd is for you. If you’re like most die-hard fans of old school, Soul and R & B or you simply have a genuine love for all things “musically intelligent” and are always looking to quench the musical thirst, then support Temika Moore. Spread the word. Be fruitful. Go forth and multiply!

Temika Moore writes, manufactures, promotes and markets her music, as well as heading up Moore II Come Entertainment, the umbrella company for the Temika Moore brand, along with Pink Panna Music which serves as the publishing company for Temika Moore’s music.

Review : The first thing that struck me, on an interest level, was the involvement of the production team of the Diggs brothers.  The strenth of Temika is very much in the voice, there a re bits of old skool soul like Anita Baker, some acoustic/folk qualities like India Arie (only more powerful) and a whole heap from Jazz and Gospel.  The result is a strong album going through all of thee styles and more. The production team have done an excellent job.

Fruit is a track that does it for me, its more upbeat and funky with some fine piano breaks. On an upbeat note, almost a house tip, is A Woman (Armani's Remix).  My Side of the Street is fastpaced too in a jazzy/funky vein, the message somehow gives this one quite a menacing vibe. Let it Go is catchy and midtempo and maybe a track that the Uk would go for.  Groove with You is a version of the Isleys song. Light as a Feather is acoustic and reminds me a bit of Joan Armatrading.

Doing Just Fine is quality, one of my favourites, this one is in Anita Baker mould, maybe softer vocals from Temika, but simple yet catchy. The acoustic version is also worth checking Doing Just Fine (Acoustic Mix) Bonus Track . Follow Your Road is a bigger production but still subtle enough to allow the vocals through on this epic ballad.  Come Sunday is another acoustic piece but with a warm string production on top of that.  Conversation is again a simple ballad but this time with vocal overtones.

A hugely enjoyable and professional production for thos who like singers, and is an advancement on the first album, enjoyable though that is.

Tracks: -1. Intro, 2. My Side of the Street, 3. Light as a Feather, 4. Let it Go, 5. Doing Just Fine, 6. Fruit, 7. Groove with You, 8. Follow Your Road
9. Come Sunday,10. Conversation ,11. A Woman (Armani's Remix), 12. Doing Just Fine (Acoustic Mix) Bonus Track, 13. Speak to the World (Outro)

Jeff Hendrick – Soul Celebration www.jeffhendrick.com

Canadian Pop and R&B vocalist Jeff Hendrick is no stranger to success. Since first hitting the stage at the age of seven, the accomplished singer/songwriter has emerged as one of his homelands brightest young music prospects. Deeply rooted in the R&B and Pop influences of artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Michael Jackson, Hendricks smooth vocal offerings often conjure up images of Philly soul rather than the Canadian praries. His mature and dynamic stage presence has captured fans both locally and nationally, and his other talents as a saxophonist and keyboard player have truly made him a unique musical entity.

As a youngster in Edmonton, Alberta, Jeff performed classical and jazz music as a vocalist, pianist, and saxophone player and was recognized both locally and nationally with numerous performance awards. Early in his musical career, Jeffs father brought home R&B and Pop recordings from artists like The Commodores, The Doobie Brothers, and Stevie Wonder, and an deep affinity for the genre was born. After completing a Jazz Performance Degree(Saxophone) at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Jeff returned to Edmonton to make his singing and songwriting dreams a reality.

After a two year stint honing his chops in local Latin Funk sensations MARACUJAH!, Jeff set out performing around town with his own band and unique brand of urban flavored soul and pop. The local response was overwhelming, and Jeff soon started recording his first solo demo c.d. Jeff wrote, produced, and performed all the material on the demo.
In the fall of 1997, Jeff made his first journey to New York to promote his c.d. and talents to several major record labels. Jeff would return to the "Big Apple" again in 1998 for more meetings with labels and production companies. In March of 1998, Jeff finished fourth out of four hundred entries the CBC Alberta song contest for his song "Feel Like Starting Over". The same song receives local air play on FM radio to this day.

In June of 1998, Jeff was nominated for an Alberta Recording Industry Award in the Soul/Rhythm and Blues category, and in July of that same year he and his band opened for Sony recording artists THE PHILOSOPHER KINGS at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival. Jeff has performed as a headliner at almost every Edmonton venue, including a memorable shared billing with local legend TOMMY BANKS at the Winspear Centre.
1999 brought more musical successes for Jeff as he performed over eight times at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, including a stellar opening set for Chicago’s LIQUID SOUL. During the festival, Jeff was the local host of a segment of "Impressions", a weekly Jazz show on Washington, DC based cable channel BetOn! Jazz. Between September 1999 and April 2000 Jeff made several trips to Los Angeles where he quickly made an impression both on the stage and off. Jeff has headlined at famous Los Angeles clubs like THE ROXY THEATRE on Sunset Blvd. and B.B. KINGS RESTAURANT & BAR at Universal Studios. Jeff also had the opportunity to meet and work with established L.A. based artists like BRIAN MCKNIGHT and ALL 4 ONE.

Other career highlights include performances on the MUCH MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS, a tour to Paris, France, and performances at all the major Canadian Jazz Festivals. Jeff has shared the stage with other Canadian artists like Bass is Base and Glenn Lewis. In June of 2000 Jeff was a winner in the CBC P2K Songwriting Contest and a live set of his music was recorded for a c.d. and radio broadcast. Jeff and his band also opened for BMG recording artists JACKSOUL at the 2000 Edmonton and Calgary International Jazz Festivals. Jeff's official debut CD 'Bout Time' was released on November 30th, 2002 and his first single 'Dance With Me" has had regular rotation on Toronto's #1 Urban Station Flow 93.5! A cross Canada and European tour are scheduled for 2003. Plans for a first ever music video are also in the works.

Jeff Hendrick's approach to music is simple. Perform from your heart and soul, be true to who you are, and capture the audience with passion and sincerity. Both his live and recorded music reflects these philosophies. Jeff is determined to share his talents with the world and to help put Canada on the map in the R&B and Pop genres. This determination will undoubtedly serve him well as works to achieve his musical dreams.

Review: -

This album is already getting big plays in the Uk and it is easy to see why.  It is perfectly suited to the UK’s Modern Soul idiom, and several tracks fall into this category, instantly appealing, dancehall friendly.  Tracks like Celebrate , Old School Party  I Just Wanna Dance   Summertime  You're All I Ever Wanted  She's So Sexy are all excellently produced, contain some fine sax work.

My criticisms would be that it is a bit samey and the lyric content is weak. It’s a bit stepping orientated and I have a big hang up about that at the moment, its formulaic nature and ‘jump to the left’ lyrics.

I Like The Way is jazzier, bit lower on the tempo, Love U Down is a ballad and One Ya Want  is a touch more R’n’B.  there is a second mix of Old School Party (feat. Spek).

It is an enjoyable album, instant and feel good, my worry would be that it would lack longevity.

Mike Hammond www.mikehammond.net

“Every once in a while there comes a talent that cannot be ignored. He grew up listening to the legends: Stevie, Luther, Michael, and Donny to name a few. Today he's ready to hold his own with his contemporaries: Musiq, Dwele, and Anthony Hamilton. His interpretation of songs is impressive. His vocal range is astounding. His energy on stage is contagious. His name is Mike Hammond.

At the age of three in the Hollis area of Jamaica Queens, this local celebrity started singing in the Blanche Memorial Baptist Church's Tiny Tot Choir under the direction of his aunt. When family members found out there was a singer in the family, influences came from every where. From Gospel with an auntie and soul music from uncles, to Doo-Wop music from Dad and his Mom playing a wide variety tunes daily, Mike came to appreciate all facets of music.

Growing up he'd perform all along the east coast in church programs, talent contests, shows, pageants and festivals. Then at the age of 11, Mike was invited to perform on Hollis Stones' debut album "Welcome to My World" where he sang lead on a number of tracks. Then a year later he was asked to take part in Hollis's sophomore project "White Soul." Though both projects didn't go much farther than the New York City area, Mike enjoyed the experience and knew he wanted to record a project of his own someday.

Through the years, Mike has toured the U.S. and Europe extensively and has had the opportunity to share the stage with Gladys Knight, Billy Joel, Patti Labelle, and Kelly Price. His travels have taken him to the Caribbean and even to Africa to perform for the Royal family of Morocco. He has opened shows for Jennifer Holiday and Cathy Sledge of Sister Sledge. He has also recorded with 50 Cent, Incognito, and DJ Roger S just to name a few.

His self-titled solo album is a culmination of years of hard work and dedication to his craft. Being a prolific writer and daring vocal arranger, Mike has worked with the hottest new producers and seasoned musicians to create a project that stands apart from the rest.

Mike Hammond is ready. Are you?”

Review: -  A very nice album indeed from the beat laden opener Can I with mellow vocals.  Dance for Me meanders somewhere inbetween say a Marvin gaye and Leon Ware, track kind of kicks off as if its going to be an uptempo dancefloor groover, but mellows out.  Dancer is string (or string effect laden) with a dancehall rap, tho’ its not really a dancehall track, percussive and echoey.  Got to be There is a bit more contemporary R’n’B.

Move...Go I like, more neo I suppose both in delivery and lyrical storyline concept, stronger vocals, moody and threatening.  The Morning After is a great track, bit D’Angelo in feel and vocal delivery, jazzy trumpet too.  Holdin' On is another personal favourite, still mellow but moderately funky, catchy hook.
Give It to You is  a weird one, almost spoken. How Could You Do This to Me is a bass heavy ballad which I thought was going to kick off vocally but it didn’t, in fact, whilst the vocals are good I get the feeling that there’s a whole lot more range, expression and extension available than is in evidence.

I Want You is funkier, containing a Rufus & Chaka sample.  One Time Romance contains a lite reggae beat to which his voice is quite well suited too. Stay w/ Me leaves one of the best to almost last, a mid tempo groove, nice and moody containg a nice sample it seems……….. World is a ghetto I think.   Closing with a dead slow love ballad Inside You

I liked this album, several tracks grabbed me but the whole thing hangs together well, good production.

Costie Payne – Far From Perfect

“Introducing COSTIE PAYNE - Accomplished Songwriter, Composer, & Dynamic R & B Vocalist

At the age of six, Costie Payne began sharing his God-given talent in a small, down-home church in his hometown of Magnolia, Arkansas. Over his brief lifetime, he has developed a unique style and delivery often referred to as "Pro School" as he adopted the writing style of yesterday's greatest R & B pioneers, coupled with today's innovative arrangements. Costie's commanding stage presence, superb showmanship, silky tenor vocals infused with sensuously soulful melodies and his alluring sex appeal make each and every performance unforgettable!

Costie served a four-year term in the U.S. Army where he worked as a cook and member of the 82nd Airborne Division Chorus as he continued to pursue his musical calling. Costie's military career was suddenly, cut short when he chose to donate a kidney to his ailing father in an effort to save his life. This unselfish act of love was successful although, his desire to perform burned within him as strongly as ever. Following his military career, Costie heeded the familiar call "Go West Young Man", remaining diligent in his quest for the seemingly elusive "brass ring" and settled in Southern California in 1997. Shortly thereafter, he had the good fortune to meet the extraordinary producer Arthur Brown whose credits include artists such as Ice Cube, George Clinton, P-Funk, KIDDO and the legendary group Rose Royce. Mr. Brown took Costie under his wing, mentoring him in the areas of musical arrangement and production.

Costie currently tours nationally with two dynamic and renowned R & B groups, Rose Royce and The Bus Boys, while focusing his energy on producing his first solo project consisting of original material, written, arranged and published by the artist. He is already a familiar face, voice and name overseas and on radio stations due to live performances in Japan.

Today, Costie is committed to reaching the highly anticipated goals of international artist and producer. The core values instilled by his loving mother and grandparents together with his strong faith in God drive him to produce and promote positive musical projects that he intends to use to affect the lives of many people throughout the world.

Review:- Been getting top plays and good exposure for a while now, bit slow on the case I’m afraid though I’ve had the CD for a good while now! The opening track is mellow, great vocally easy catch to hook on to We Don't Have 2 Say Good-Bye and very much a highlight.  All I Wanna Do is also a killer midtempo dancer with excellent vocals by Costie and his duettist Alex Day, again another catchy hook, against some strong beats.  The other top cut for me is We Go On which is brimming with emotion, slow but hard groove, stunning track.

Life 4 Me and If We All Try are slow urban featuring Justified on the rap and are OK but not as good as the soul tracks. Crazy is a more upbeat, funkier rap cut. Up N The Club is a pretty short track, maybe could have done more, but it leads into the  best rap section on the album on Fantasy.  The album concludes in a hip hop vein with Childhood Luv and  Lost Soul

Unborn Child is quite a powerful track lyrically, lots going on in classic ballad style but it for me sounds a bit ‘false’ on the production. I think over the last year or so in independent soul productions, the ‘bar’ has been raised enormously, and maybe why I’m being marginally critical.  Falling In Love is maybe the second best ballad.

Three great soul tracks, a couple of quite good ballads and some OK Hip Hop, but well worth getting for the three ‘killer cuts’

Tracks: - 1. We Don't Have 2 Say Good-Bye, 2. All I Wanna Do ,3. Life 4 Me ,4. We Go On ,5. Unborn Child, 6. If We All Try ,7. Jazz Interlude ,8. Falling In Love, 9. Crazy ,10. Up N The Club ,11. Fantasy ,12. Childhood Luv ,13. Lost Soul

Jazzhole – Poets Walk – www.soulbrother.com

A thoroughly enjoyable, professional and listenable to album, the fifth by New York outfit Jazzhole featuring Marlon Saunders on many of the vocal tracks, though somehow in all this losing a little bit of the embryonic naturalness that existed in its predecessors.

All the way is a slick dancer pretty much as slick as Incognito (which great as the production is means its almost too perfect, a sound which is hard to dislike or criticise but personally I am finding a bit tiresome) – great vocals though.  Jonesin is faster pace, echoes of a Stax backbeat, with a great sax break.  Lowdown is a pretty good version of the Boz Scaggs tune.

Tell me one more time is funkier, again great vocals and guitar and certainly a grower.  It could have been enough is a laid back jazz y groove with acoustic guitar prominent and old skool keys, doesn’t really go anywhere though.  Slippin of time is a sweet and lovely acoustic ballad.

Do it right is back into a more upbeat groove, yet still mellow, moody and vocal driven.  Timeless is a fine lazy ballad.  Closes with a dubby remix of All the way.

A pretty listenable to album which is already garnering some plays on the forefront radio shows – only to be dropped on release no doubt!

Tracks: - Sax instrumental, All the Way, Jonesin’,Lowdown, Tell me one more time, It could have been enough, Slippin of time, Do it right, Timeless, All the way Remix.

Days Ahead – Turning Point www.daysaheadmusic.com

Info: -Pat Metheny meets Chaka Khan! Days Ahead, based in Atlanta, combines elements of jazz, soul and rock to create powerful compositions. Wright meets Leachman. A collaboration of guitar and singer who's melodies merge into each other in constant musical conversation, and is driven by the solid rhythm section of bassist Myron Carroll and drummer James Barrett.

Days Ahead's debut album "Turning Point" boasts mature lyrical content. While some of Kim Leachman's lyrics are autobiographical, some are spur of the moment that worked well with Steve Wright's versatile playing style. Their first collaboration, "You Move Me", is an up-tempo love song with sultry vocals on the verse that are sexy and melodic followed up by a world beat chorus. Rock and Latin influenced "Falling Flower" is energetic and passionate. Advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility best describes this tune that's filled with guitar and vocal scat lines, grooving bass and explosive drums. The "Days Ahead" tune, gives a 6/8 reggae feel with expressive guitar melody lines that are modal and fluent. "Courting A Fantasy", an acoustic duet, offers jazz authenticity with guitar and vocals resembling that of Tuck and Patti. Each tune by Days Ahead constantly moves, there are twists and turns throughout. Love, regret, discovery, and world views are pronounced as "Turning Point" offers improvisation as well as orchestrated hits and breaks. Steve and Kim's meeting was the turning point for their lives and their music. The perfect title for their debut album. Other contributing musicians on "Turning Point" are bassists Jeff Smith and Aaron Clay, as well as Drummer Joe Lee. Their musical contributions helped complete the Days Ahead sound.

Days Ahead's most memorable show was performing as special guest artist for Richmond Music and Arts Festival this year. Leachman recalls "The kids, young adults, as well as the adults all danced and sang to our music with equal passion. It wasn't above anybody's head." Days Ahead's music crosses ages, genders and cultures and people enjoy feeling good about good music. Wright mused, "The home crowd is supposedly a tough crowd to please, but it was a great adventure. It was a good feeling to go home as a successful artist." Whether it's the four piece, 4+, or duo, Days Ahead leaves their audiences looking ahead to the next time!

Days Ahead is receiving critical acclaim and are regarded as "a group with staying power" in the jazz contemporary industry. Energy...Strong Melodies... Pure Talent...are powerfully delivered in this band's shows, and these elements are stamped throughout their debut album "Turning Point". Listen for yourself!

Review: - Formed principally around Kim’s vocals and Steve’s guitar and their joint writing days Ahead have devloped a sound that is interesting and different.  It’s not often that guitar’s have such prominence in Soul but it works without it ever become too heavy, however it is the power and strength of Kim’s vocals that sell it for me. The album throughout has that feel of, if you were to see them, it would sound exactly the same as this.

A kicking track starts it off You Move Me, ostensibly upbeat but goes through various stages and changes.  Love Is Love has touches of what I prefer best on here acoustic guitar and soulful vocals but it does get harder as it builds.    Falling Flower chugs along at a piece with all the constituent parts including bass and drums play their part, on what I guess I Santana –esque – I can appreciate it but not sure its me.  For The Love however is more me, sultry, sensual soulful powerful dirge ballad.

Good Ole' Days is lighter and poppier, maybe not poppier but more instant and sweet.  Don't Fall Too Fast is long but it is one of my preferred tracks which has a ‘comfort’ level of its own beacause everything is totally in sync with each other.

I’m not sure how much I’ll be going back to this because it is different form the norm, whether it will become part of my norm I’m not sure. One of those that is commendable for pushing out the barriers, deserves to be heard, would be excellent to see live, and one to make your own mind.  For me the mood will need to be right.

Tracks: -1. You Move Me, 2. Love Is Love, 3. Falling Flower, 4. For The Love ,5. Good Ole' Days, 6. It's In Your Hands ,7. Days Ahead, 8. Take Your Time
9. Don't Fall Too Fast, 10. Courting A Fantasy

Rhythm Republic – Soul Congregation Rising

Info: - Rhythm Republik - 'Progressive BLACKMUZIK' 4 the SOUL

Rhythm Republik is an institution. A New York City self-contained original music entity. The 'MUZIK' is FUNK based yet decidedly diverse. The lyrics are deep and hit you with an energy that cannot be explained, only experienced. "They bring a message from the grass root to the powers that be," says Jane Perk their longtime advisor. This ensemble remains a source for commentary on social and political ideas for culture-at-large for over a decade!

Introspection, reflection and resurrection swirl positively from their creative space. Guitars cut like knives and paint the sky! Keyboards drip with melody, harmony and finga-lickin' hot sauce! Drums and Bass hold steady together like a heartbeat, giving hip-shaking fits for all! Vocals ring like a choir of street corner shouters sanctified, political and randy! Occasional brass cover the senses with a beautiful sheen and punctuate the overall sound of this ensemble!!!

Rhythm Republik has been an opening act for the following: Teena Marie, Fertile Ground, Steel Pulse, Julie Dexter, The Family Stand, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli, Zapp & Roger Troutman (late), Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors, the Last Poets and The Wallflowers (Jakob Dylan)

They Celebrate the 'proper' release of their debut CD "Soul Congregation Rising"!

Some Reviews:

"Very few new millennium artists understand that so-called genres are imposed to keep musicans locked in a box. Led by Mabili Kregg Ajamu, the New York
based group Rhythm Republik refuses to be regulated by style barriers. Whether fusing reggae riffs with soul-boy grooves ("Never Put Me Under), personal
commentary with gutbucket guitars ("Daddy, I Wonder") and melodic balladry with cool jazz undertones ("Secretly"), the Rhythm Republik collective offers
the listener an ocean of grooves. Beyond aqua boogie and serpentine fire, their debut disc Soul Congregation Rising represents the New Funk."

Michael A. Gonzales/ Popmatters.com Music Columnist
On the Corner April, 2005

"Led by MABILI Kregg Ajamu, Progressive Black music spiritual force and impresario, this Gotham sextet deploys their 21st century classic funk to resurrect the Black Romantic. The romanticism is not about escape but a remembrance of an era when the streets valued community more and engaged struggle was the blood-duty of aware folk of color. Not just knee-deep in infectious grooves, incantatory vocals and flamboyant threads, the diverse, dedicated band strives to give crucial voice to the grassroots in wartime, reminding the 'powers that be' that a Rhythm Republik is what this land always has been...and ---if these brothers and sisters have their way ---always shall be."

Now and forever, they remain dedicated, seasoned, and on a mission.

Review: - Opening track Never Put Me Under (Rise-Up)  that encompasses what Mabili and the Rhythm republik are all about, driving rhythms, funky horns, guitar and keys in unison and individuallly, great soulful vocals by Lenora Jaye and above all a message.  Chocolate Starr is mellower, catchier.  All Saints Fall is a duet, a ballad, that biuilds and builds, some great instrumentation and wonderful lyrics.

Mystikal Luva is funk straight out of the old skool, thr first full on funk track. Sweatshop Blues again lyrically taking on a topic and view point of oppression, all of them are covered, whether local, national or international, here given a Blues tilt with lenora at her best.

Stay Broke again another point to get across, in an amusing yet serious way.   Indigo Queen is a driving ballad, Secretly and If I Only Knew That You Love Me are the nearest there is to a love song, the first a beautiful acoustic piece and the second a pure soul ballad with Mabili’s voice straining against a mellow chorus.

Thigh cooks up the funk one time, and the guitar work on the whole album deserves a mention, but particularly so on this track.  Flowers In a Cage is one of my favourites, a midtempo track, sweet chorus, the male and female taking turns. Disposable Culture is a hard hitting observation  (and truism) of todays living

An album that is full of interest, much to hear and take in, and I would wager if you saw them live, which they are based on, it would sound exactly the same as this. The overriding cocept though are the messages.

Tracks: -1. Never Put Me Under (Rise-Up), 2. Chocolate Starr, 3. All Saints Fall, 4. Mystikal Luva, 5. Sweatshop Blues, 6. Stay Broke, 7. Indigo Queen
8. Secretly, 9. Daddy, I Wonder, 10. Recipe Cookin'/ FLHITK, 11. If I Only Knew That You Love Me, 12. Thigh, 13. ...Still Broke, 14. Flowers In a Cage
15. Disposable Culture

Adam Falcon – Piece of Mine www.adamfalcon.com

My man Adam on a 4 track sampler, Like a Soldier, the unreleased Rhythm of Love (Two Thousand Sex), October Falls and The Waves (Solo version). A couple of these tracks will be on the forthcoming album Bohemian 959.  Principally I would put Adam in an Acoustic Soul category, and these tracks are coming from that tip.  However there is lot more depth and layering to these productions – this is a Soul Alternaive that is well worth checking out. The pick for me is October falls a beautiful warm ballad.

Maya Azucena – Acoustic http://www.mayaazucena.com/

Maya’s next project will be an album ‘The Acoustic’, hot on the heels of her Acoustic Tours with Anthony David. Having had the priveledge of seeing Maya perform acoustically I can vouch for the fact that she can cut it, in fact she is so versatile as to be able to cut it in any marketplace.  However the acoustic tracks allow the listener to get deeper into maya’s voice, and for her to portray her vocal prowess to full effect.

A pre release sampler of 5 tracks has been prepared containing Down Down, Break the Spell, Set you free, Like no other and Warrior. Additionally this kind of material lets Maya get messages across in her songwriting (with Christian Verhalen). There is a beauty in these tracks that is not evident on her other albums.  Break the Spell is the top cut for me, althouth the percussive version of Like No other is exceptional too.

Performed with Ivan Ive09 and Christain.

Chandlar – Strong Emotion http://www.iamchandlar.com/

Info: -Chandlar, a multi talented singer, songwriter and producer whose musical style has earned comparisons to the great Marvin Gaye, brings forth raw talent, honest and uncontrived. Hailing from Chicago's Westside, Chandlar's sound is soulful and engaging, a reflection of his deep musical roots, as his uncle Kermit Chandler of The Sheperds, lent his talents as a guitarist, and producer to the likes of Chaka Khan, Earth Wind and Fire, and Curtis Mayfield, among others, educating Chandlar on the elements of authentic soul music that stands the test of time. This gifted musician polished his skills as a performer and in the process has become one of New York's favorite featured vocalists at various prominent venues across the city, such as S.O.B.'s, Joe's Pub, The Supper Club, and Chicago and Boston's House of Blues as well as the famed Sugar Bar where musical legends Ashford and Simpson have repeatedly showcased Chandlar's talents. Chandlar was featured on BET's 106 & Park( to veiw go to http://www.newsoundnetwork.com/video.php ). His superior performance ability has allowed him to open up for some the industry's top artists including R. Kelly, Twista, the late Aaliyah, 112, Donnie, Donel Jones, Cisco, Missy Elliot, Timberland, Montel Jordan, Freddie Jackson, Allison Williams, Mellisa Morgan, Ashford & Simpson, & Boyz II Men. In addition to being regarded as an exceptional entertainer, Chandlar has produced songs for Def Jam Recording artist, Montel Jordan, Erick Sermon's Def Squad Records, Blunt TVT's recording artist LaTanya, and engineered sessions for Kid Capri's TML Management, as well as Rappolot Records. The reaction to Chandlar's first CD release, "Strong Emotion", a rich R&B journey through a young man's experiences with life and love has been overwhelmingly positive. Garnering the praise of music lovers and music makers alike, Chandlar is proving himself to be a true and rare talent, whose unique combination of musical abilities, vision, and spirit not only meet a higher standard, but create one.

Review:- Good to meet Chandlar recently and I believe a new CD is soon forthcoming.  In the meantime this album is well worth visiting.  There is an ease of style in the vocals that is a throwback to the old school, there are no rough edges here. There is a feel and flow whether it be upbeat like Tear Your Walls Down or the ballad Baby Girl You Got Me, both very fine tracks, Tear your walls appealing to UK Modern soul heads.  Keep Doin' Me Like That is also a bit of a stepper. One Time is also a very easy ballad.

Strong Emotion the title track is a bit , only a bit, harder, but still in mellow sensual vein.  Never Thought, with an intro straight out of William Devaughn, and builds in to one of my favourite tracks.  Spend The Night  has an operatic feel in the intro with a less mellow, less sweet vocal.

For Once In My Life  has a slightly jazzier vibe.  Shake It ups the pace, bit more neo but not one that appeals to me too much.  Mess It All Up is heavier on the beats and a track that  I find myself returning to, reminds me of something R’n’B, can’t put my finger on it, maybe Dave hollister or something.  Feel Secure is mellow, higher and jazzier.  Miracle is a beautiful lilting ballad where the vocals drift over and hit the higher points of Chandlar’s extensive range.                 You Don't Know is in a similar vein.  More Than Everything closes an excellent album

A very nice album which I wish I had visited earlier.  Chandlar remains in demand in the New York scene (though hailing from Chi-town) for all his skills and it will be interesting to see how the new album progresses from this very fine set.

Tracks: -1. Intro: I Stand B4 You, 2. Tear Your Walls Down, 3. Keep Doin' Me Like That, 4. Baby Girl You Got Me, 5. One Time, 6. Strong Emotion, 7. Never Thought 8. Spend The Night, 9. Safe & Secure, 10. For Once In My Life, 11. Shake It, 12. Mess It All Up, 13. Feel Secure, 14. Miracle, 15. You Don't Know
16. More Than Everything

Chuck Mills – Thank you

Info :- Old school cool and new school attitude come together in Thank You, the new effort from singer-guitarist Chuck Mills. The result is eleven tracks of highly-contagious modern R&B, songs of love and hard experience that are by turns streetwise, heart-weary, hope-filled. Smoothly kinetic grooves, plush harmonies and loping beats that get under your skin before your skin even knows what's happening.

It's called Thank You. Truth is, you'll be thanking him. -- Leonard Pitts, Jr. -Pulitzer Prize Winner & Music Critic

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, (now residing in Southern California) Chuck Mills started playing the guitar in his early teens. Listening to Jimi Hendrix, Steve Lukather and Ernie Isley as a young man, influenced the guitarist/songwriter's soulful style and sound. Chuck's debut, THANK YOU blends old school cool with new school attitude. Smooth R&B, clever lyrics, and a little 'bling-bling' pop will keep this CD in current rotation in your player for a long time. This reviewer is partial to vocals + lyrics, so I was bouncin' the minute the album kicked off with "No Romance W/O Finance". The song is all bottom line, "You gots to come with it... If you don't make dollars you don't make sense." The title track, "Thank You" is a graceful ballad. The single, "Whisper In My Ear" is a well crafted pop tune that you find yourself singing along to without benefit of really knowing the words. Songs like "Rachel", "One Woman Man" & "Give My Heart To You" lead you back to a time when life was simpler and we didn't have information overload from our laptops, Blackberries, Nextels. You remember when pop, soul and groove all melded together for a hot sound that was issued consistently from artists like Ray Parker, Billy Ocean, Jeffrey Osborne. These guys held court at the top of the music charts back in the day. Chuck Mills, we 'thank you' for finding a way to bring the cool of then to the smooth jazz of today. ~Sandy Shore.. (SmoothJazz.com)

Review: -This has been out for a while now but it’s definitely worth visiting or revisitng.  Some cool grooves from the singer guitarist Chuck Mills.  No Romance W/o Finances is a great starter, echoes of the  old school in feel and in lyric contect.  Thank You is a great ballad with tinges of Curtis Mayfield, or Isley Brothers.

Whisper in My Ear is more of a pop ballad, catchy with excellent guitar break. Rachel is slightly more upbeat, bit more contemporary maybe and storyline lyric.  One Woman Man is heavier guitar driven and not so much to my taste.

Back downbeat with Love Brought Me Home (cause Pimpin Ain't Eazy) I kinda like thr groove on this and the way it all links with the piano lines, not the kind of track that I would normally go for but I do like it.  Just Because I Love You is a straightforward, though well produced ballad.

Love Is What You Need is another favourite, great hook old skool yet still a modern vibe.  Give My Heart to You is a track to persevere with as it builds and builds and grows and grows. At first I thought it wasn’t one for me but now its one of the tops.  She gave up on love is another fine ballad, bit of a Southern feel to this.  Everything's About Her sounds very early 90’s sort of a Guy thing.

A warm and enjoyable album, nice feel, nice grooves and well put together, some great lyrics and storylines – guess its about time for the next phase!

Da Juan – Chapter One http://www.musicgorilla.com/notallowed.asp

Info: - Da'Juan's Bio

Some people are born knowing there destiny. I believe this to be true in my case. Ever since I can remember I've always been around music. I can remember my mother singing in her gospel choir before I was able to complete my first sentence. It was during that time I began to imitate my mother. As I grew older singing became second nature to me. Eventually, I began performing in school talent shows, local showcases, singing, rapping, anything to be on stage performing. But even then, it was all just for fun. It was in 1999 that my father would introduce me to the person who would change my relationship with music forever. His name was Forrest. Forrest worked in a studio and after hearing my potential, decided to take me under his wing and began showing me the recording process. Through him I learned the theory of music, how to write, arrange, and I began to find myself artistically. He gave me the tools and the environment to work on my craft. The more I evolved musically, the more I realized my talent and the importance of properly communicating that to the world. I consider myself a mouthpiece representing those who have no voice, through my music. I have always admired well rounded musical influences such as Carl Thomas, Bilal, Dave Hollister, Tyrese, Brian Mcknight just to name a few. Each of these artists encompass elements musically that remain real to there listeners. They're true to who they are artistically, as well they send a positive message to listeners. My music has an authentic soulfulness that I feel captures the essence of who Dajuan really is, and provides me with the leverage needed to further music. My style is a throw back to what R&B music used to be, sung by legends such as Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway, & Wilson Pickett. Along with my musical ability, I have developed an extreme passion for business. The knowledge I have acquired has inspired me to start my own Label (L.A.B. Entertainment L.L.C.), with partners who have the same work ethics and visions as myself. My biggest inspiration in my life comes from a person small in stature, my son Dewuan Ja'mont Wilson Jr.. There's something unexplainable about the focus and clarity that a child can bring you. Being a father keeps my responsibility to music all in perspective. My son is a constant reminder of my purpose in life and the conscientiousness that goes with that. It is his unconditional love that I can depend on to continue motivating and reminding me why this path has been chosen for me. We now have all the pieces of the puzzle and feel we are on our way. Music and the ability to perform it is a blessing that GOD has granted me and through his guidance, I plan on fulfilling what I know I'm destined for. To express my life story through music, a story filled with passion, stories that my audience can relate to and be inspired by, no matter how tough times are. Being able to live with no regrets! As long as I give 100%, everything else will fall into place. This is my essence. This is Da'Juan........

Review : -Easy modern soulful R’n’b containing some great tracks.  Saterday ft Impact is garnering some plays and is a great track complete with Dramatics string sample, catchy and easy. Falling For Another is another fine tune, bit funkier on the guitar break, but still firmly in the mellow r’n’b camp with another catchy hook.

The album (in the early stages particularly) is kind of in the Jaheim, Natural Mystic camp in style, effect, marketplace and storylines, that kind of thing, though a bit mellower on the vocal, so its more in the R’n’b that neo soul, which is absolutely fine by me.  Indeed for that reason I like it a lot.  Two-way for example is that kind of Jaheim storyline lyric.  Fall in Luv is a straight ballad, a bit more old skool, bit of Isleys in the vocal and the sample

Essence of a Woman is almost spoken word, but funky nonetheless, very sparse arrangement until it gets going.  Committed is different, jazzier backbeat and rather more complex. The mid section contains nothing earthshattering but nothing disastrous either Love Story , Why Do I a fine ballad.

Picks up again, more old skool and the If loving you is wrong sample Can't Live.  Sometimes I Wonder is a great ballad duet.

The final two tracks exemplify the album, the first Ordinary Day is soulful contemporary R’n’b and then How Come gives props to the old skool, again complete with sample,

A very good album, commended.

Tracks:-1. Intro ( Remember Tha Day), 2. Saterday, 3. Falling For Another, 4. Interlude (Two Way), 5. Two-way, 6. Fall in Luv ,7. Essence of a Woman, 8. Committed, 9. Love Story, 10. Why Do I, 11. Can't Live, 12. Interlude (Sometimes I Wonder), 13. Sometimes I Wonder ,14. Can't Live (reprise) 15. Ordinary Day, 16. How Come

Meli’sa Morgan -  I remember http://orpheusent.com/

Info: - Blessed with a passionate, powerful, straight from the heart voice, and lauded world-wide as the female personification of genuine contemporary R&B, scintillating Soul Princess MELI'SA ("Do Me Baby") MORGAN returns to the music industry forefront with I REMEMBER, her brilliant new Orpheus Music album, slated for release in August 2005.
The solid, much anticipated set is spearheaded by a remarkable, chart climbing, lead single remake of the 1979 Roberta Flack / Donny Hathaway smash "Back Together Again."
Throughout Meli'sa dynamically duets with her Orpheus Music label-mate Freddie ("Rock Me Tonight") Jackson, a/k/a the Sultan of sensual soul; who, like Meli'sa, recently signed a new recording contract with Orpheus Music (originally known as Hush Productions), the innovative record label, management and distribution company that launched both of their celebrated careers in the mid-1980s. "After nearly two decades in the entertainment industry these legendary performers continue to be among the most respected and talented vocalists in the business," said Orpheus President Beau Huggins, who, with Orpheus CEO and founder Charles Huggins, and its Vice-President, Charli Huggins, forecast major success for Meli'sa's hot new album. "We are so pleased that she and Freddie are back with us," adds Beau." We're ready and committed to take them to the top of the charts again."
Well on their way of doing so, personified by slick, first-class production, the powerhouse pair's consummate voices and raw emotional runs take "Back Together Again" to unbelievable new heights. With all due respect to Roberta and Donny, Meli'sa and Freddie make the timeless classic their own. "Once I decided I wanted to record 'Back Together Againi," advised Morgan, who was inspired to record the song after hearing the original on her car radio, "I knew I had to do it with Freddie; who is a close and enormously talented friend. We always wanted to record together, and judging by the awesome response the song is getting from fans, the press and radio, it clearly was the perfect choice."
Radio's number #2 most added single the week of its official release, "Back Together Again" is just another example of Meli'sa's uncanny ability to make perfect song choices. Check the record. Her critically acclaimed list of #1 hits include the Prince penned "Do Me Baby" (which made her a star), the fearless funk of "Fool's Paradise," the sizzling sensuality of "Do You Still Love Me," and "Love Changes," her electrifying collaboration with super '80s producer Kashif.
The I REMEMBER title track is ready to add another chart-topping slow jam to Morgan's stellar list of hits. Co-written and produced by Meli'sa and long time collaborator Lesette Wilson (who contributed six songs to her CD), "I Remember" is the album's sensational debut solo single. Breaking new emotional and vocal ground, Morgan delivers a pulsating, sensuous performance. Indeed, not since the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin stunned the world with the haunting "Ain't No Way" back in the '60s, has a new contemporary R&B ballad delivered such lyrical power, poignancy and pleasure. "This song is one everybody who has ever loved somebody, lost somebody or found that somebody again can relate to," says the deep thinking, ever-beautiful Meli'sa Morgan. "It's one of the best and most sincere songs I've ever recorded."
Influenced by great R&B divas like Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin, Meli'sa's impressive album also features her new stylized version of the aforementioned "Ain't No Way." Giving it her own spine tingling spin, she takes the Ashford & Simpson produced track to a rarely reached soul inspired plateau. "It's a song close to my heart, and working on it with my friends Nick and Valerie gave me the extra incentive to push the envelope. I wasn't trying to do it better than Aretha, no one could. I just wanted to do it my way, hoping to touch people with it the way the original version always touches me."

Keeping in touch with her younger, cross-generational fan base, the booming beats and shear hip-hop/soul influence of "Will You," another I REMEMBER hit-bound highlight, has the potential to widen the parameters of today's urban music landscape, and allow Meli'sa to reach inquisitive, open-minded teens seeking more substantive contemporary R&B. "I love young impressionable people," says Meli'sa, whose Meli'sa Morgan Foundation works on behalf of teen girls, encouraging their education ambitions and positive growth initiatives. "Musically and educationally speaking, I believe if you give kids good alternative choices, they are not only eager to listen, but willing to learn. Once they discover their positive roots, musical or otherwise, there's no turning back."
Turning back the hands of time to when Meli'sa first discovered her God given gift of song, she was only four years old when she started singing for people. "My mother was my driving force," she recalls. "She saw something in me and would sing with my sister and me, and have us put on shows for her friends in our Queens, New York living room. I love her for her encouragement because I have always loved to sing!"
By 8 Meli'sa was singing in the church choir. But it was her success in a high school talent show, wherein she basked in the glow of audience applause, that Meli'sa says she, "knew I wanted to be a singer. Nothing would ever be able to fill my heart and soul that way, and that is what I have devoted my life to.... singing. I have never needed drugs or anything like that. As long as I can sing.... that's the only high I will ever need."
After high school Morgan toured with bands, sang in clubs and attended Julliard's prestigious School of Music, studying music theory and chord structure. Next came backup singing and touring with major artists, including Chaka Khan, now one of her dearest friends, and still, informs Meli'sa, "one of my idols." The Khan connection introduced her to Lesette Wilson, then Chaka's musical director. "Lessette was inspirational for me during my first and second albums with Capitol Records," praised Morgan, whose reigned as one of Capital's premiere stars during her tenure at the label. "Not only did Lessette and I become close friends," adds Meli'sa, "together we wrote and produced "Fool's Paradise", "Do You Still Love Me?", "Good Love" and many other songs. That's why it was a wonderful decision on Orpheus and our parts to reunite and write and produce for my new CD."
Having experienced the highs, lows and in-betweens of the ever changing music business over the last two decades, Meli'sa, an accomplished songwriter, producer and actress, who studied at the Lee Strasburg Institute, understands that in addition to talent and tenacity, timing is everything. "I think the music industry is now more receptive to strong, gutsy and stylistic R&B singers, and this is a blessing for me in this day and time," says the distinctive vocalist, versatile singer whose ability to move an audience is legendary. "The universe," she concludes, "works in cycles. Everybody has his or her time. I believe it's my time again and I'm back in the game."
Back in the game and "Back Together Again" with her global legions of devoted fans, sexy soul Princess Meli'sa Morgan, along with Freddie Jackson (whose brand new album comes out later this year), and trailblazing Orpheus Music are at the forefront of a revolutionary new contemporary soul/R&B movement that kicks off with the Meli'sa's melodic masterpiece, I REMEMBER, a future classic album, that's impossible to forget.

Review: -  This is quality, old school , new school it doesn’t matter as the intro alludes to, and this is the best of both with some delicious vocal performances.

The differences in style are condensed into tracks 3, 4 and 5.  Back Together Gain (Duet with Freddie Jackson) is a beautiful stepping version of an old school classic with some punchy horns, I Remember... a passionate soulful ballad and Will You? bing firmly in the current R’n’b dancehall arena.

But it doesn’t stop there Feel You is a top tune classy vocals and could have come out of Atlntic in the 60’s or 70’s.  High Maintenance also has a 70’s feel, in the Shirley Brown mould but also sufficiently contemporary to appeal to say the likes of Mary J Blige fans – a killer track.

And you know how I hate interludes preludes outros and the like but this one - Interlude: Ain't No Way – well ain’t no way it’s an interlude - stunning!

Alright, Alright is upbeat punchy R’n’B.  Let You Go is as good a point as any to introduce and complement Lesette Wilson for her part in the album having produced written performed and played on this and a number of tracks.   There'll Never Be another strong ballad, though nice I feel that Meli’sa tries to hard on this one, lots of different strains and intonations, possibly technically good but too complex IMHO of course!.

I'm Your Sistah also like the previous track a collaboration with Lesette but I feel this much more, strong family storyline lyrics and much simpler vocally (by comparison).  Same Ole, Same Old is old skool funkier.

Do You, Do You Want It? is a powerful dancer in the gospel house vein, excellent.   Closing perfectly on Ashford and Simpson He's The One

Tracks: -. Intro: The Voice Featuring Vaughn Harper, 2. Interlude: Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, 3. Back Together Gain (Duet with Freddie Jackson), 4. I Remember..., 5. Will You?, 6. Feel You ,7. High Maintenance, 8. Interlude: Ain't No Way, 9. Alright, Alright ,10. Let You Go, 11. There'll Never Be, 12. Interlude: Pack'd My Bags ,13. I'm Your Sistah ,14. Same Ole, Dame Old ,15. Do You, Do You Want It? ,16. Interlude: I'm So Into You ,17. He's The One

Natural Selection – Come on over http://naturalselectionmusic.com/aspx/templates/pro5a.aspx?msgid=0

Info: -Natural Selection, the brainchild of Alesia Dessau, has been in it's current incarnation since 2002. As their name suggests, the Philadelphia-based ensemble's current style of music is the result of “evolution.” The group originally formed as a straight-ahead jazz combo, but has since transformed to an original soul sound that includes inflections of funk, R&B, jazz, rock & hip-hop. The current members of the collective are experienced in virtually all styles of western music, and the resulting creations of these talented musicians have a wide appeal.

Alesia Dessau’s sultry vocals and inventive lyrics float effortlessly above tight vocal harmonies, solid rhythmic grooves, and carefully placed melodies. One needs to look no further than Dessau's carefully assembled band to notice the diverse influences involved in Natural Selection’s music. Both drummer Justin Leigh and keyboardist Jeremey Barker are seasoned jazz musicians and bassist Michael Stauss spent years with the Healthy Doses, a prominent improvisational “jam band.” Adding lush harmonic texture and sharing a strong lead voice is Topaz Wise. Music director & saxophonist Korey Riker adds electrifying solos as well as tasteful accompaniment to the groups broad tonality.

Where Natural Selection truly excels, though, is in live performance. The onstage chemistry that exists between all of the band members is infectious, and the adventurous, improvised nature of the music moves any audience. The powerful vocals and the foundation of solid rhythmic communication that define Natural Selection’s sound are magnified by the energy of their live shows.

It’s not surprising that Natural Selection has regular gigs at many of Philadelphia’s top original music venues, and enjoys the presence of a large and loyal following consisting of fans of all styles of music.

Review: - Very much a ‘live’ and real band feel to this, not necessarily the same sounding but in the same mould as say The Chapter or Yamama’nym.  Origins as a jazz band so the musicianship and diversity of musicianship is excellent, such as the Cello intro on the first track that really grabs my attention Get Through, a mellow groove, punchy beat against that cello and guitar work and gorgeous vocals of Alesia Dessau.

Come On Over is again driven by the excellent vocals of Alesia which by now I’m getting attuned to and seriously liking, more of a neo structure to this one.  Unity is lyrically strong funkier and even a bit of a get up stand up kind of groove.  Now You're Gone is a strong moody bluesy ballad and when all said and done possibly one of my favourite cuts.

Fly Away is a mellow funky number.  Come Into My Love again illustrates jazz roots and is one of those ballads that when seen in the right environment grabs audiences attentions, quality vocals again.

Tracks: -1. Meant To Be, 2. 10/15/01, 3. Get Through, , 4. Come On Over, 5. Unity, 6. Now You're Gone, 7. Fly Away, 8. Sweet Intruder, 9. Come Into My Love, 10. Make It Easy, 11. Time To Say Goodbye ,

Review: -  As the info above testifies a mixture of smooth jazz and neo soul grooves.  The Intro Seduction is spacey trancey, spoken vocals byShonia Brown, and a nice vibe laid down by Dezz.

Sweet Kisses and Whenever I'm with You features Marvelous White the latter track is my favourite of the two with a breezy jazzy feel, with a touch of old school and stronger vocals

The best vocalist on show is Ty Morgan on Comfortable Silence and Show Me, the first a keyboard driven dreamy ballad, and the latter being funkier and beatier.

Spend The Night is the title track instrumental, programmed like vibes and featuring the trumpet of Mark Abrams, a smooth jazzy piece.  The Interlude Seduction is another smooth jazz thing.  Emotions features an excellent sax, Frank Valdez but is essentially a smooth piece.  The final track is harder and funkier containing a Steve Arrington sample Weak, weak at the knees.

Well produced and programmed and contains some good moments particularly on the vocal tracks.

Tracks: - 1. Intro Seduction, 2. Sweet Kisses, 3. Comfortable Silence,  4. Spend The Night, 5. Show Me, 6. Interlude Seduction, 7. Whenever I'm with You
8. Emotions, 9. Comfortable Silence (music), 10. Weak

Introducing Ty Morgan http://www.nbeatmusic.com/

Info:- Ty Morgan is currently an Independent singer and songwriter residing in Atlanta, Ga. Her natural talent for singing was discovered at the young age of six. She further sharpened her vocal talent while studying music at the Emerson School of Visual & Performing Arts, and The Chicago Music Conservatory. Ty's training facilitated her winning The Hal Jackson's Talented Teen Pageant and first runner up in The Hall Jackson's Talented Teen International Competition in Hollywood Ca. Ty also competed in The Miss Virginia State Pageant and The Miss America Pageant competition - one of her greatest career challenges.

Ty has continued to develop and establish herself in the music industry by entertaining celebrities and politicians in various music venues all over the country. Her talent has won her opportunities to perform with and in front of many well-known artist such as "R. Kelly, Glady's Knight, Evelyn "Champagne" King and Denise Williams" to name a few. Her smooth sultry voice has been compared to the vocals and talents of singers such as "Sade and Chante Moore".

Ty has become an Atlanta favorite showcasing her talent in such well known venues as Celebrity Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe, Apache, Cafe 290 and Taboo. Ty wrote and co-produced her first CD single "No Matter What", which was featured on the syndicated Frank Ski Morning Show of Atlanta and is soon to be released on her debut CD.

Review :-A two track sampler My feelings have changed and No matter what, a taster from a forthcoming album but seemingly cut in 2004.  My feelings is a very nice slow ballad, the tune kind of reminds me of Oh how happy day though its not a gospel thing.  No matter is also mellow and has a nice smooth easy delivery, but the song allows for a strong vocal performance, showing what Ty is capable of.  Two very nice tracks and am hopeful therefore that an album would be strong.

Dexter Myers – Rocketlove34 http://www.dextermyers.com/

Info: - He blends R&B, Funk, Jazz and Rock in a most compelling way. A smooth vocal performance and provocative songwriting compliment his self-described Eclectic Soul. Its like Maxwell but more pop. Like Seal with a more soulful edge. Like Lenny Kravitz but more urban. Step outside the box and taste a brand new flavor of Alternative Soul…

RocketLove34 features Grammy Award winning Engineer, Ryan West (Usher,50 Cents,Eminem,Beyonce) and follows up the underground cult albums- Soul Stories and Eclectic Soul.  Six Dimensions was the start of his Indie-Soul revolution and a natural progression for Dexter after years of piano and voice lessons. RocketLove34 which Dexter wrote, composed, performed and produced will secure his place as an innovator in the Alternative Soul genre.

Upon graduating from Howard University, Dexter found himself on the road less traveled. There was family pressure to become the first lawyer and a stint in Corporate America. However, music was always his constant craving. My dad always tried to persuade me to become a lawyer and write my own ticket. I worked for a law firm for six months and it was like dying a slow death. Although a career in Advertising was a better match, it was founding Brown Ambition Worldwide that was a life altering moment. I couldnt get an acceptable major label deal so I had no choice but to do it myself. Now I have total creative freedom and I get to apply those valuable corporate life lessons to managing my music career.

By embracing the digital revolution, Dexter is selling CDs and downloads while developing fans all over the world. Its an amazing feeling when people all over the world surf onto my sites and share their thoughts about my music. It just validates my decision to follow my own path come what may. With a growing buzz and infinite possibilities, Dexter is ready to soar.”

Dexter is a big supporter of the Indie Soul Music, and his next offering is his blend of Alternative Soul, offering a warmth, a diversity and professional production not seen on many releases of this nature, check for example the horn sections on Voicemail, you can tell from the mix the time spent in layering the production into the finished article.

Dexter enlisted the help of DJ Scientific on many of the tracks which is especially evident in the harder drum programming on  Ask Me for example. The title track Rocketlove34 leans towards Drum and Bass, includes some guitar by Ben Tyree. You Got It has a catchy pop hook, vocal range extended and some throbbing beats.  On Glow you can detect nuances of Prince against a funky backdrop. They All want you incorporates a violin and choral harmonies and old skool funk.

Super Star is probably the most instant cut, prominent guitar (which actually is quite a feature and indeed quite unusual).  Obsession is I think the best vocal performance on the album.  Forever/Whatever is more downbeat but still contains some funky guitar and a string arrangement.  Made For Love is heavy on the beats but sweet on the harmonies, catchy yet heavy with the addition some Guitar work.

World Peace was recorded live, is jazzier, bit reggae too and gives a taste of what you might expect in seeing Dexter live.

This is a thoroughly professional and enjoyable album, difficult to categorise which actually is its strength.  Dexter and I have talked at length about working outside the box, this is yet not in an objectionable or eccentric way, it is hugely accessable so give it a chance.

Oh and thanks for the mention!

Tracks: -1. Super Star, 2. Voicemail, 3. Obsession, 4. Ask Me, 5. Forever/Whatever, 6. Rocketlove34, 7. Made For Love, 8. You Got It, 9. Glow
10. They All want you, 11. World Peace

Ingar Brown – Words and Beats http://www.ingarbrown.com/

Info: -Born and raised in Harlem, NY, I grew up listening to old 45's of Sam Cooke, James Brown, The Temptations, The Four Tops and Jackie Wilson. As a teenager, the soulful sounds of 135th St. and Lenox Ave. gave my feet a beat to tap to, my mind a few things to think about and a drive that touched my soul. Prince, Al Green, Rick James, George Clinton and Luther Vandross were my music teachers and from them I learned the true definition of musical expression.

As a self-taught musician, I found myself wanting to play any instrument I could get my hands on...please don't ask me to play the saxophone though...:-)

As I got older, I did the norm, went to college (Boston College), graduated. Then went to school again for myself...(Berklee College of Music), graduated! Before long, I began to become the musician that has long been inside of me.

Today, I sing with a band called Busta Groove (www.busta-groove.com) and have finally finished my first solo project, Words and Beats. The music and the words represent my life as it has been so far. I hope you enjoy it, listen to the words, feel the beat, then...repeat!

Stay beautiful. IB

Review: - Like this, nice feel and vibe to this and ‘Words and Beats’ actually sums it up quite well.  Beautiful Places is a fast paced but enjoyable beaty piece with a memorable instrumental hook.

What's It Like is very much in say Soulchild territory in style lyric and vocal delivery, but still retaining an originality.  Down Girl is a deep ballad complete with Isleys guitar.

Go For A While is a weird one against a pounding piano and 60’s style organ is an almost spoken Sly Stone delivery.  More Than Your Lover I much prefer and again there are influences, a mellow dreamy chilled relaxing Curtis Mayfield.

The Line is a more traditional supper club jazz ballad.  Still in a mellow groove but more diverse, again old skool influences on A Stray bit funkier, P funk kind pf thing.  Far Away is a good acoustic ballad, so whilst all are mood tracks there is much of interest and variation.  3 A-Yem is a dead slow love ballad.   Baby's Eyes is a mellow funky conclusion.

All in all a very interesting and promising album, it kind of ends as a mellow relaxing mood CD and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I found the tracks at the front end were punchier and more interesting.  Much to commend and I liked it.

Tracks: -1. Words and Beats, 2. Beautiful Places, 3. What's It Like, 4. Down Girl, 5. Come on up..., 6. Go For A While, 7. More Than Your Lover
8. The Line, 9. A Stray ,10. Far Away ,11. 3 A-Yem, 12. Baby's Eyes
