Peter Tosh and Friends: Black Dignity: Early Works Of The Steppin' Razor (TJACD241)

Peter Tosh is one of those artists that have never won me over totally.  Sometimes he has literally blown me away but at other times has fallen short. Against that backdrop the era on this set falls mainly in the former category.

Brand New Second Hand is top Wailers and I srightly the opener…..but concentrate on the Joe Gibbs productions.  The Reuben riddim is so infectious and powerful, and when the lyrics are put down on Them a Fe a beaten, with sweet harmonies and stabbin organ, outstanding.  Rebelation takes the satta Massa Ganna rhythm but the next highliight mongst the Joe Gibbs is Arise Black man.  Tosh always srtrong with lyrics is so here but on the other hand all the ‘dog’ sessions are amusing as is the Rudy Medlay.

The Wilers cur=ts are split between Lee Perry and Leslie Kong.  Kongs are Stop the train, Soon Come, Go tell  it to the mountains, Can’t you see.  Perrys are Brand New Second Hand, Four Hundred Years, Downpresser.  On a straight head to head Perry wins.

Peter Tosh and Friends: Black Dignity: Early Works Of The Steppin' Razor (TJACD241)

Format: CD album
Released: Mar 05 2005
Price: £8.99

Focusing primarily on Tosh's best-known early works, this compilation features his earliest attempts to make his mark as an artist in his own right. Along with his best-known solo sides for Joe Gibbs from the early '70s are releated recordings by a number of his stable-mates, plus a number of tracks on which he fronts the Wailers, cut prior to his permanent departure from the group in 1973. Put quite simply, 'Black Dignity' is a must for all Tosh and Wailers' fans and is anything but just a load of old Tosh.
