Get up stand Up – Jamaican Protest Songs

An interesting compilation offering some slightly different cuts under the protest banner, by that I mean different than the oft toted tracks.

Kicking off with the folky but nonetheless anthemic Luciano’s Eve of Destruction.  Then straight into the late 80’s dancehall with Junior Reed.

Filled with the big names like Third World, Uhuru, Marley, Pulse, DB, big tunes like Tenor Saw, some great voices like Beres hammond delroy Wilson, Don carlos, Freddie mac and one of my favourites the Israel vibration.

Picks for me are Beres Hammond, bushman an dth egreat Delroy Wilson. I could’ve done with less of the covers like For what its worth, universal soldier, blowing in the wind despite a protest value – the same protest, now that would be a different argument.

'Protest Songs' features the most potent reggae anthems in the history of Jamaican music, combined with five new recordings of classic protest songs from the 1960s. From Bob Marley & The Wailers "Soul Rebel" and Peter Tosh's "Get Up, Stand Up" to reggae-fied versions of John Lennon's "Working Clas Hero" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth", this collection takes a bite out of the new world order. 'Protest Songs' is a welcome addition to the ever-popular Reggae Pulse series. The mass appeal of these great tracks makes this a must for any fan of roots music. All killer, no filler! Eighteen great tracks with broad appeal to reggae fans, rock fans from the '60s and Marley fans from the '70s.
