Various Artists: Trojan Roots and Culture Box Set (TJETD226)

Spanning the mid 70’s to mid 80’s when arguably Roots and Culture was at the height or prominence, though still eveident and powerful today.

CD1

Kicking off with a couple of Locks tunes, strong bass lines, Linval Thompson and Uroy. The former always been a favourite of mine but U Roy is so so powerful and out on his own.

Moving on to Rastafari, Africa, Babylon.  Gregory Isaaca wonderful Beautiful Africa which is a group vocal sound with The Gladiators (I think) on harmonies.  Wayne Jarrett’s Satta Dread is also strong. A lot of heavyweight artists with good representation like I Roy, Prince Lincoln. Michael Rose, johnny Clarke, Leroy Smart.

CD2

Cool soulful easy vocal of Freddie McGregor and the hard dub and toast od classic Dillinger. The sounds can be cool and melodic or hard and bass-y, compare and contrast Inner Circle stoccato vocals to militant Tapper Zukie. Sweet tones of Horace Andy to wicked and wild Lee Perry.

Great track from lesser known Mike Brooks, and extended version by Dennis Brown of To the Foundation.  Vocals don’t come any better than Cornell Campbell

CD3

Barry Brown better known for his sweeter soulful covers in full flow on Protect them. Some newer names came to prominence in the early 80’s like Barrington Levy, tristan Palmer, Bim Sherman. But big names to Sugar Minott, Leroy Sibbles, Al Campbell, Johnny Osborne.   But for me once again it’s the vocal groups that do it for me Wailing Souls, Israel Vibration and the Viceroys but special mention for Prince Far I a voice so distinctive and Poetic it always does it for me.
