Toots
& The Maytals: Roots Reggae: The Classic Jamaican Albums - 6 CD Set
(TBOXCD284)
A wonderfully
package compilatoin of 6 complete Toots and the maytals album from 1965 to 1974
and namely The Sensational Maytals, Sweet and Dandy, Monkey Man, Greatest Hits,Slatyam
stoot, and roots Reggae, with lookalike original packaging.
One of the beauties
or vagiaries of complete album sets is you get the ‘real’ picture no warts and
all, but I have to say that these albums stand pretty strong and there are not
many dud tracks.
The early 1965 album
Sensational is simply that from bouncing catchy ska Its you, You make me feel and
Never You change, through to mellow gospel soulful call and response wailings,
a trademark which enabled some crossover to Soul fans, like daddy and If you
act this way. From this album it
was clear to see that the group would go far.
Sweet and Dandy in
fact was the first album that contained the Tighten Up skinhead classic Monkey
Man and not the album of that name from a year later. Also included was the
massive and wonderful alltime best Toots track Pressure drop encapsulating the
mood of the nation at the time. On
a lighter notebut equally catching and near the top of everyone’s favourite is
the joyous Sweet and Dandy. Another classic on this rounbreaking album was the ‘release’
song 54 46 That’s my number.
Monkey Man was more
streamlined into the emerging reggae beat and also incuded Pressure Drop and
Monkey Man from earlier. Possibly was a bigger seller but inits entirety the
album is not as strong as either earlier or later albums in my view.
Into 1970 and 1971
following a period of great popularity came the obligatory greatest hits
package which included fresh takes of peeping Tom and One Eyed Enos, plus 54 46
and the Monkey Girl response tune.
Toots though really was never better than on the more mellow less
frantic material of which Walk with love is a perfect example.
CD 5 sees Slatyam
Stoot which included some earlier songs and a reworking of Pressure Drop. It was an OK album and still very much
in Toots style but time was moving on and something fresh was required, which
eventually came along with roots Reaggae, the 6th album here.
By now there was an full
on embracing of Roots Culture which manifested itself in this album. By this
time also of course there was competition for number one popularity with one
Robert Nesta.
