Vicki Anderson – Anthology

17 tracks from James Brown's favourite female singer incl all the rare Groove monsters like 'Message From The Soul Sisters', 'Supergood', 'I'm Too Tough For Mr Big Stuff', 'Answer To Mother Popcorn', her take on Home Is Where The Hatred Is', 'Stop On By' and 'Once You Get Started' plus her great version of 'Wide Awake In A Dream' and the soul ballads. Another great Soul Brother anthology.

Great to see a profile at last of Vicki Anderson, prominent of course as part of the James Brown Revue on more than one occasion, and this is apparentlyher first album (albeit a compilation).

Kicking of with the Rare Groove anthem with wonderful keyboard groove and militant stance THE MESSAGE FROM THE SOUL SISTERS. SUPER GOOD being the answer song to Jabo’s SUPERBAD and very much in that groove. I'M TOO TOUGH FOR MR. BIG STUFF (HOT PANTS) is another answer song but this time out of the JB stable, Jean Knight. Answer’s continue, the best of the trio MOTHER POPCORN funky in the extreme.

The funk tracks are faultless but it is great to have some tracks out of that groove, like I WANT TO BE IN THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY, which is somewhat bizarre but vocally excellent.

Back to the funky groove BABY DON'T YOU KNOW which is very much more VA than JB, and for me a top cut. A duet with James THINK but I would have loved to have sen the other side Nobody Cares.

There is a 90’s version of HOME IS WHERE THE HATRED IS (WITH BOSS NOSTRA) which I have to say I wasn’t familiar with by her, a great song but she stamps her own mark on it.

Of the more recent material WIDE AWAKE IN A DREAM is far away the best, in moody two step territory, showing a smoother but nonetheless dynamic vocal. I'LL WORK IT OUT is also classic deep soul in the Linda Jones category – wonderful. The album closes in this deep soul category with James Brown YOU'VE GOT THE POWER and the standard WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE.
